GOP chairman apologizes for Limbaugh remarks

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two days after calling Rush Limbaugh a mere "entertainer" with an "incendiary" talk show, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele apologized and acknowledged the radio commentator as a "national conservative leader."
"To the extent that my remarks helped the Democrats in Washington to take the focus, even for one minute, off of their irresponsible expansion of government, I truly apologize," Steele said late Monday.
Steele's statement capped a remarkable weekend of awkward sparring between Republican officials and Limbaugh, who has repeatedly voiced his desire that President Barack Obama's economic policies fail.
The back and forth reached a fever pitch Monday afternoon when Limbaugh roared back in response to a Steele interview with CNN's D.L. Hughley Saturday night. In that interview, Steele rejected assertions that Limbaugh was the "de facto" leader of the GOP. "Rush Limbaugh, his whole thing is entertainment," Steele said then. "Yes, it's incendiary. Yes, it's ugly."
Limbaugh used his Monday talk show to unleash on Steele.
"Why are you running the Republican Party?" Limbaugh asked on his radio show. "Why do you claim you lead the Republican Party when you seem obsessed with seeing to it that President Obama succeeds? ... I would be embarrassed to say that I'm in charge of the Republican Party in the sad-sack state that it's in. If I were chairman of the Republican Party, given the state that it's in, I would quit."
The infighting between a top party official and a conservative opinion leader who claims to have an audience of 20 million developed into a distracting episode for a party struggling to compete with a popular president and find its voice as the opposition party.
"I respect Rush Limbaugh, he is a national conservative leader, and in no way do I want to diminish his voice," Steele said in a statement late Monday. "I'm sure that he and I will agree most of the time, but will probably disagree some as well, which is fine.
"The Democrats are doing everything they can to find ways to take people's attention off of their massive 36-billion-dollar-a-day spending spree that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have embarked on. To the extent that my remarks helped the Democrats in Washington to take the focus, even for one minute, off of their irresponsible expansion of government, I truly apologize."
Democrats, who have been trying to handcuff Republicans to Limbaugh, reacted gleefully to Steele's apology, saying it illustrated Limbaugh's influence over the party.
"Chairman Steele's reversal this evening and his apology to Limbaugh proves the unfortunate point that Limbaugh is the leading force behind the Republican Party, its politics and its obstruction of President Obama's agenda in Washington," Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said Monday evening.
Over the past several days, the White House and its Democratic allies have launched a concerted effort to draw attention to Limbaugh in a belief that his support exists only among the most die-hard conservatives.
Democrats have used Limbaugh as their foil instead of Republican congressional leaders, recognizing that part of Obama's appeal is his outreach to Republicans, even if it's not intended to bear immediate fruit.
On Sunday, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said: "It's our desire that the Republicans would work with us and try to be constructive, rather than adopt the philosophy of somebody like Rush Limbaugh, who is praying for failure." It was a theme that Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs reiterated during his press briefing Monday.
This weekend, a labor-liberal coalition began airing about $100,000 in ads on national cable television and in Washington markets in an effort to handcuff the GOP to Limbaugh, whose provocations don't always follow party script.
"Rush Limbaugh is the leader of the Republican Party — he says jump and they say how high," said Brad Woodhouse, president of Americans United for Change, the liberal advocacy group that is sponsoring the ads with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Limbaugh has refused to back down. Speaking Saturday to a conservative convention in Washington, he said: "What is so strange about being honest and saying, 'I want Barack Obama to fail if his mission is to restructure and reform this country so that capitalism and individual liberty are not its foundation?' Why would I want that to succeed?"
The words made some Republicans besides Steele flinch. Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the No. 2 Republican leader in the House, on Sunday seemed eager to change the subject. "Nobody — no Republican, no Democrat — wants this president to fail, nor do they want this country to fail or the economy to fail," he said on ABC's "This Week."

On another note, Limbaugh's apparent leadership of the Republican party and the obstructionist tactics of the party's chief elected officials without any clear policy positions are leading ostensibly to at least a generation in the minority.

Yes it is sad he got the job because of his color I think becuses he should have got the job because of his morals and brain. He is a great guy. 10 million people listen to Rush. He should not have apoligized. It was a knee jerk reaction. Let's all get along.

He was a good LT. Gov in Maryland, fairly conservative and fairly moderate, and keep spending/taxes low from what I remember.

I am a kind of Libertarian. Smaller government and leave me alone. Not thatit matters, just so you know me. Fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

I guess you think he was chosen because of color as Sarah Palin because she is a chick? If she was a man I do not think she would have been picked.

Anyhoo.... I am not sure why Steele wanted to be it except ist is a job and keeps him in news to run again later.

Nonsense ... of course he was picked largely based on his skin color. You know, for a party that touts "self-responsibility" and "merit" mindlessly, the Republicans sure know how to roll out their token members of color at the most convenient time. Have a president popular amongst African-Americans (Clinton); well we'll roll out our own guy (Powell). A black woman as campaign manager (Donna Brazile) and then Bush rolls out Condi and Powell as his "advisors". The Dems had a woman running in the presidential primaries, and somehow the Republican Party conveniently nominates a dull-witted, attractive yet abrasive twit who just happens to have a clit. The country elects a black guy, what the heck let's make sure it's just a minor coincidence that we happen to elect our first black chairman weeks after the aforementioned popular president was inaugurated. That same guy with approval ratings surpassed probably only by Capt. Sullenberger gives a rousing address to Congress, and the Repubs somehow scramble to planet brown-guy to find a comical, awkward-sounding moron to up the ante.

Seeing any patterns here? Yeah, i thought so too.

 

Steele is flip-flopping all over the place. He's much a figurehead than a leader. If it was not for Obama's victory he would never gotten that job. He is only bending down to the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh.

 

It takes a MAN with a backbone to apologize and from what I read in accusations of Steel against Rush, that apology was needed.

I like the brother Steele. But he has lost a little of his luster now to Limbaugh. Any hope of getting more blacks into the GOP is going to be a little tougher for him. He has been cast as a "Tom" by those on the other side who never trust the so-called conservative black, although most blacks are in fact conservative anyway. A fact most of America ignores.

Blacks by a majority especially here in the South have always been conservative in their religious beliefs, the family, and respect for authority. We are however, socially liberal in some areas of life such as equality in employment, our tolerance for others, and civil rights. Study the past history of blacks in this country, especially the turning point between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Debois (hope I spelled his name right) and you will find that there was always strong conservative values among blacks until the present in self reliance (look at the history of black businesses, universities and colleges in this country) read about A.G. Gaston, the millionaire in the 1930's, when black families were the foundation of the black communities before the Civil Rights movement at least until the 1960's of rapid revolutionary social change. The far left has done a great job in denouncing conservative thought in favor of dependency and victimhood. Thank god men like Bill Cosby, Juan Williams, Walter Williams and many others are still fighting the good fight of black men and women holding on to their conservative values of working hard, getting an education, loving your family, loving your children, respecting women, making the community strong, self-reliance, self respect, believe in god etc...............................................................................

 

All those traits like hard work and self-reliance are not "conservative" values but quintessentially AMERICAN values regardless of political bent. It kills me how you people like to hijack those values for your own ends, but have trouble living up to them.

 

To put Cosby in the same breath of those house slaves like Walter Williams,Juan Williams,and Thomas Sowell is wrong. Unlike those clowns Cos gave to the community big time. A few Black conservatives knows what time it was. Most like Clarence Thomas,Jesse Peterson and others are just detrimental to the Black community.
