I don't mind paying my share of taxes. The spend and stiff crowd(conservatives) wanted something for nonething.
No, that is why poor people pay no income tax at all, in fact, they receive Earned Income Tax Credit. I think Obama disagrees with the idea that Americans are undertaxed: WASHINGTON -- President-elect Barack Obama and congressional Democrats are crafting a plan to offer about $300 billion of tax cuts to individuals and businesses... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123111279694652423.html
Are you opposed to this? If not, why not? Is this not penalizing the rich by taxing them while benefiting the poor?
I don't have a problem with it, but I think the person should have to be employed or on unemployment for a limited period of time to qualify. While it is true that these working poor would pay no income tax, you have to consider the fact that sales tax, gasoline tax, etc make up a larger percent of their income than a middle class or rich person. This EIT offsets that.
That's why if I were President, the tax rate would be very low, no more than 8% across the board. That way, even the low-income wage earners can pay it. And poor people use things too. They use the public schools, which many of them don't pay for (because many of them are renters and don't own land). And I didn't vote for Obama, nor did I vote for McCain either.
Are you opposed to public schooling for the poor? eta: 8% of your income is HUGE when your income is small.
No I am not against public schools. I attended them from kindergarten to the 12th grade. I was merely stating that some lower income people do use services that they do not contribute to financially. And while it is significant for someone who makes 20k/year (like myself), it's not oppressive. It would be $1600/year. I do not believe the government should discriminate against someone who makes more money. If an 8% tax rate is too much, we can lower it to 6%. That would be fine with me
Can you be more specific? If you mean unemployed due to a disability, there are several tax breaks that apply which probably make EIT insignificant, but yes, I would include that group.
Hannity is doing this Tea Party nonsense. Where were the GOP when they were in total control eight years ago?
They were busy going along with whatever Bush wanted. Don't be fooled. Bush wasn't fiscally conservative by any stretch of the imagination. He spent as much as any Democratic president and the Republicans in both houses pretty much went along with it
??? Clinton left behind a multi-billion dollar budget surplus when his tenure as president ended. http://www.cbo.gov/budget/data/historical.pdf You guys should really do some research instead of posting statements that are based upon ideological affiliation rather than fact.
What is there to debate? We're not talking about deficits or surpluses. We're talking about spending. Clinton spent over 1.5 trillion dollars a year. He was a big spender
Uh yeah, running a country with a multi-trillion dollar economy and 300 million people costs money, but people who can do it without leaving behind a huge budget deficit deserve credit, especially when you're comparing them to recent Republican presidents who did not. A particularly salient point you left out of your analysis.
How do you propose to maintain the amenities and standard of living commensurate with what people expect from the country with the leading economy in the world without a great deal of government spending? Oh...that's right. You live in Libertarian fantasy land. Removing the issue of budget surplus/deficits from the context of a discussion of about government spending in order to make some bizarre claim about the equivalency of the economic policies of Clinton and the most recent Republican presidents is intellectually dishonest and, quite frankly, a bit silly.
