This goes both ways. If your white and in a non-white area, and if you are black in a white area, also if your interracial dating and going in either area. My opinion on it is it's more curiosity then anything and I honestly don't think it's a big deal. If you're an interracial couple, your going to get looks regardless because it's not common, and when people see something uncommon, they become very interested in it; unless you're in a diverse city. I mean is a black kid in Sudan not going to be amazed if they see a white guy strolling by? It's rare, you want to know more about it, etc. People are naturally curious, not a big deal to me.
Nobody really stares here, to be honest. But you can tell the difference between a curious stare and a malicious stare. Curiosity, I've got no problem with.
i lived in an asian area for a while and was stared at all the time, i was starting to feel like a freak if anyone stared while i was with exes i used to just smile back at em its the stares my little one gets that bother me, thats when im likely to say something to people
Not really. I've lived in predominately white areas ever since my family moved to the States when I was a kid, so I'm used to it.
I don't let it concern me. Sometimes I have noticed and I have had to be reminded why someone might be staring. Usually I'll smile and say hi.
I wanted to give you rep points for this, but the board says I've gotta spread some around first, so I'll just co-sign. :-D
Since both me and my man travel a lot, we see eachother in many different cities. I dont think we have seen much stares curious or other- or we just dont see it. Only a few times has it been something that was uncomfortable and it has by a coincidence - or other - always been in the DC area. But offended... no.
the stares here arent for curiosity, they are about hate and racism, so i hate them--especially here in the northeast usa where they are suppose to be all open minded and progressive
In LA - you know I work for a company in Philly and we have had weird stares out in the sticks north of Philly.
I am sure of that too, i live in downtown Philly and we get stares, people shout things, and come in your face. esp black women in downtown, but lots of older people do it also and alot of the affluent(which suprised me) do it as well, they mostly stare. I lived in upstate New York never had a problem nor in Vermont, but in Massachusetts oooh and the jersey shore, uggh. we dont get it in the countryside west of Philadelphia where the Amish live, they are very respectful or do it out of curiousity.
The Amish has been nothing but respectful and I like going to the Amish restaurants there, good food and nicer people you have to look for. In the New Hope/Lamberville area, it was a bit weird, but - it is out in the sticks It is interresting that there are so much of this going on in the North East, I think.
Hard to believe in this century they still stare. I don't care since they are either curious or jealous.
I remember one time, i was chilling at a public vicinity- day dreaming. And suddenly I snapped into consciousness and there standing before me, approx 20m away was a SEXY woman–fixing her long-silky hair. My heart began beating faster because I thought damn, sexy girl alert!! Surely, I HAD to walk up to her and ask for her number??. So I began walking towards her…..and walking,,,,and walking,,,,,and as I got about 5m away from her, a man,,,,,a very skinny, BALD man, who couldn’t be taller than 5 feet, came running to her. My heart broke when he got to her and said…"hunny, I cant find diapers"…..FUCK… As this beautiful Goddess, proceeded to walk hand in hand with this very skinny, short, and very bald man, I couldn’t help but stare, longingly to be honest, until they lost themselves into the crowd. Basically ,I don’t mind staring at all, because I tend to do so myself…..you see,,,,I think of myself as being an observer of humans, life and of humanity. I love paying attention to life-visually and mentally. Although I endeavor not to demean people by my critical and analytical stares, I sometimes observe concepts that I find fascinating in a staring fashion because I cant help myself :smt033
actually New Hope, Lambertville are suburbs of Philly and they are suppose to be progressive gay hangouts, well New HOPe is liberal artist colony but the people stare at you if you are IR the Amish are great yes
