GOP has a bad record on race and has not improved. The Democrats came through for Blacks and some Black congressmen like Adam Clayton Powell Jr wrote legislation for fellow Blacks.

It is true, just about every political party founded in this country has roots in ugly racism, sexism, religious bigotry, class-warfare ect.

Was there a point in this show after these two idiots spent all of that time recounting facts that should be well-known to anyone who's taken even a cursory glance at American political history made mention of Nixon's Southern Strategy? Yeah, the Democratic party used to be notoriously anti-black, and the vast majority of blacks in this country supported the party of Lincoln before the 1960s. I find it disturbing that so many Americans know so little about politics that they don't understand how those two conditions reserved themselves.

ETA: I don't take anyone who uses the phrase "Democrat Party" instead of the proper adjective "Democratic" seriously. If you want to have a serious discussion about politics, dispense with the childish insults.

I'm so sick of this nonsense. Robert Byrd was briefly a member of the KKK more than half a century ago. Irrespective of his Dixiecrat roots and whatever personal prejudices he may harbor, the man has towed the party line on Civil Rights for the past thirty five years. He also showed no compunction whatsoever in coming out in support of Obama over Clinton during the contentious Democratic primary last year when the vast majority of his constituents in West Virginia (regardless of party affiliation) were displaying opposition to then Senator Obama ranging from mistrust and uneasiness to overt hostility. Using Byrd as an example of purported Democratic Party racism at present is laughable.

If you're confused about why blacks overwhelmingly support the Democratic party at present instead of the Republicans you should read this link and do some research on your own about the "Southern Strategy" and modern racial politics in America.

Where were those Republicans when Byrd gotten those leadership positions in the 1970's? They are nowhere to be seen. Also, when Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act he said the Democrats will lose a Generation of Southerners to the Republicans.

and being briefly--the head of theKKK not just a member and as recently as the 90s making racist remarks ok, whatever.

slavery was over 100 + years and some folks still asking for reparations, i guess thats old news too.

no statue of limitations on racism to me

No disrepect...but what is the point of this thread ? The country's history is full of racist acts...in both major political parties.

There are racists in both political parties. There is so much history that is purposely ignored. The ignorant masses will believe anything you package to them. President Woodrow Wilson showed his degree of racism in how he himself saw blacks in the last century. That Jack Johnson (boxer) series revealed to me just how racists the Democrats and Republicans were and still are when in comes to manipulating the minds of blacks.
