They are not okay with me liking white women. My mother wants me to be with a woman that looks just like her, which seems kind of pervated to me...
I think more black families are more accepting because we as black people have be assimilated into European/white culture. We have to deal with it to be employed and live a relatively stress free life. On the contrary black culture is something that many people still have to get used to. From what I notice a lot of black families who have a problem with it usually do because of safety fears white families that have problem usually have a superiority complex. I can say this goes far beyond my opinion look around.
My parents used to have a problem with it cause they wanted me to marry a "Nice Jewish Boy". They saw that wasn't happening. My moms met my ex and she really liked him. In fact, she used to take his side when I'd explain to her about our conflicts. She's trying to marry me off so I could marry an alien and she wouldn't care/ My extended family and my siblings could care less as well. Regardless, they want me to be happy.
Not really. I have had a hard time for many years. I used to keep my dating life hidden. That killed me. I felt like I was a Gay person who wanted to come out of the closet. I think they realized that this is who I am and I'm not changing. So it took a long time to get to this point.
I feel you. That's why now I refuse to meet friends and family until we establish WE are a WE. No more jumping hoops and looking for approval.
Then again, if I dated other men, I'd still probably keep my dating life hidden. My family is embarrassing...lol I keep the details of my dating life hidden and only share that with my friends. My moms always asks me for updates on the men in my life. I know it's cause she wants to marry me off and wants to see where I'm at. I agree about the WE thing. The reason this last ex met my moms was cause he kept flying out here (I live in LA and he lives in NY) and so she wanted to see who this dude who's showing a lot of interest in her daughter. Like you, now for a dude to meet everyone, he has to be serious about me.
My family members literally don't like inter racial dating. It took me a long time to figure out that I need to stop pleasing other people and actually take a stand for myself. Now, I don't need approval at all; I never needed approval to begin with. My philosophy is, "you can't help who you fall in love with." Although, with or without my family support, this is my life. I choose my decisions. I've had a crazy last couple of years with my family and now I wish I would have stood up for what I believed in all along. I was afraid of what people would think or say. And why? I can't believe I let people try or live my life for me. Why wouldn't they want to see my happy? There are tons of questions and what if's but I'm all about happiness. Black men make me happy! I've taken a stand now and wish I would have done it a long time ago.
Yeah but at this point I just need to know the girl is gonna ride with me if her parents don't like me. It's annoying way to live.
Im not going to sweat it though, but Im blessed with a very cool family that dont care about irrelevant issues such as color or taxbracket etc.
You and me both FG. Not like they get a say in my life anyway. Honestly the topic never comes up. My sister brought her boyfriend to my house for Christmas two years ago, my Ex pulled me aside in the kitchen and whispered 'uhm, he's black'. I hadn't actually acknowledged that, it's just not something unusual to me so I guess it doesn't register. He recommend I have my head and eyes examined, LOL.
