I was talking to a friend about this today and I wonder do we still need Affirmative Action. Thoughts?

Yes,it is still needed. When AA was removed in the universities of Cali thanks to Psycho Ward attendance of minorities came on a all time low. Conservatives wanted a all-white working place with no Blacks,Latinos, and other groups. Plus the White Liberals died for Black freedom along with Black-Americans. As long as racism exists AA will be used extensively.

But don't you think it effects the quality of workers you get when you have a system like this. Shouldn't the job go to the most qualified candidate?

Drae- who said they're not qualified? It just lowers the bar a tiny bit. The least can be done for many many years of unjust practices.

What is needed in this country is a new CIVIL RIGHTS REVOLUTION for EDUCATION and SKILLS DEVELOPMENT for AFRICANS of AMERICAN DESCENT. I'm sick and tired of whites using the excuse that if a black man gets affirmative action treatment then he must be marginal. I say fuck it, give a black man the chance from early childhood to develop their learning and intellectual gifts and he can compete with anyone in this world without a handout.

The same people who bych and moan over vouchers for inner-city in DC and elsewhere are the same ones who would be against AA and give it to their own color:White.

I think it should be changed to assist people who are poor. I mean it is not there to help barack obama's kids. They don't need it. It is there to help people who need the help.

Agreed! I would only add one thing: Give black WOMEN the chance. You'll see a radical shift in the positive direction.

Affirmative Action is what allows the most qualified candidates to get the job.

Who makes the decision to deem the Black applicant the least qualified? The ones who are against AA think Whites are most qualified for job.

I agree Soul. I am a fan of AA because too often I, as a woman, have been discriminated against b/c of my sex, not for lack of abilities. The most obvious point was in the military. But I do believe that qualifications or entry requirements should all be at one level instead of having a certain standard for women, another for non-white males, and another for white males. This disparity in standards was common in the RCMP hiring practices in Canada (it may or may not have changed since then). Nonwhite women had the lowest standard to reach, so if they were hired, they were seen as less qualified.

The running joke for the police (as told by white males) was that if you were a pregnant indian, you were in. Brutal! :smt013

A,it seems some WM are silent when AA applies to women meaning THEIR wives, daughters, and mothers. It is hypocritical to the max.
