That is true. I think the only people here who can really speak from experience relating to this issue are those who are in that piece. Someone like saintaugusta can deliver her two cents on the matter. It's hard to relate to others unless you're in that position. I'm fairly guilty of that at times, but I do take my time to understand where they are coming from.

Good post, Lippy. With this issue I can see both sides, & it's not as cut & dry as some folks think it is. When I was younger, I had my own experience with welfare. I joined the workforce at age 15, & I have been part of it except for almost two years where I was unable to for health reasons. I got myself knocked up at age 19 & started receiving medicaid to pay for prenatal care. I had a difficult pregnancy & due to some of the complications, I wasn't able to go back to work until my son was about 2. During the time of my health issues & until a child support order with the asshole who knocked me up was established we received medicaid, food stamps & a monthly AFDC check. Not long before child support payments began, I was able to go to work. My son was still on medicaid (which was supposed to end when his "dad" provided health insurance...he never did though) & I still received food stamps because my pay was crappy. I struggled to get established until my son was almost 8 when I found a job where I was able to get off of welfare. I still struggled on occasion, but I was able to work it out. I NEVER looked at welfare as anything but temporary, & I busted my ass to get off of it. There are definitely good people who need assistance when they get into a serious bind, but the good folks do what they can to improve their situations. There are many who manipulate the system & do whatever they can to make a career out of welfare. Some of them even have the attitude that they are entitled to sit on their asses & do nothing while others take on responsibilities that they should be taking care of themselves. These are the same people who are repeatedly having children they can't afford to take care of & who won't even try to get off their asses & work to pay their own bills. They spend welfare money on things that are NOT necessities such as DRUGS, ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, etc. These are the folks who make things difficult for the people who actually NEED help & something needs to happen that doesn't allow people to manipulate the system & get away with it or something to prevent it all together. I've known of dope-heads, drug dealers, & assholes who won't work having food, medical care, money & housing provided to them for nothing, yet hard working people who needed help couldn't get shit. I lived in a town once where I qualified for government housing, but nothing was available due to assholes who shouldn't have been living there. It always pissed me off (& still does) to see dope dealers living at the housing authority getting food stamps, medicaid & a monthly check driving new vehicles & nobody holding them accountable for shit. People (like my own daddy) who worked their asses off for years had to fight for disability when they become medically unable to work, yet drug addicts & morbidly obese people get the shit handed to them. It makes no damn sense. The entire system is in desperate need of an overhaul & while I can see the point of wanting to drug screen folks to try to weed out that particular element, it's not going to fix the overall problem.
wait im confused why is this a bad thing? Welfare is not an excuse to sit around smoking weed or drink liquor with your friends all day. You're supposed to be looking to improve yourself and use welfare as a stepping stone to get to another plateau if you can.
You need to read the whole thread to get an idea. Actually, hntr18 and Tamstrong and lippy provided some reasonable answers. People who are on welfare (the majority) don't sit on their asses and collect it like crazy. Especially in this environment, it would help them for a good while especially since jobs are scarce and businesses aren't open to hiring at the moment.
that's some nut shit...i know it's a government stipend funded by taxpayers so that you can do the right thing, and feed yourself and your kids get real on a side note..just be happy that you can work for a living and earn a decent income, so you can live like you want and not have to depend on government assistance for meager funds
Getting drug tested for a job is vastly different from just acquiring government assistance. When applying for a job, they want to make sure that the people that will work they are trustworthy and won't cause any problems and function well in the workplace. That's a horrible analogy.

Getting drug tested for any particular workplace or background checks are much more understandable, which is something you're severely overlooking. You, being a manager, had to get drug tested and justifiably so because they want to make sure that you're effectively capable of doing the job you're job because your position can easily affect the company if one slip up and mistrust is built. Again, this is something you're overlooking. And for the record, jackass, I don't collect welfare nor a subscribe to such things. I'd rather see being able to get something so they can live a little easier. I never implied that nothing should be done either. There are more effective ways to do over the welfare system, but drug testing would be a waste of money and time.

Okay. Here it goes... The. Key. Difference. When. Applying. For. A. Job. And. Getting. Drug. Tested. Is... ...you're WORKING in a field in which you are to function properly in its setting. Is it that difficult for you to comprehend this or not? You are expected to be in top condition and thus this builds a level of trust. Plus it would show whether or not you have a history of untrustworthiness should you be tested positive and they see signs of it altogether.
