This is a he say she say, (much like Kobe's situation was), and now that her credibility had come into question, its all we can go on since we aren't privy to the physical evidence yet (if there is). I agree with you. It's quite possible - even likely - that he did rape her. The real problem with trying to convict Strauss Kahn, though, is that criminal trials are less about the truth, since we can't really know what the truth is, and more about fairness. He can only be convicted or acquitted based on what the prosecution can bring into the courtroom, and a large chunk of the evidence available to them, the victim's testimony, has just become a lot less reliable because of lies that she has told previously. It's kind of a tragic thing, but it looks like he is probably going to get away with rape.
Where is the proof? I unfairly thought he was automatically guilty because compared to him, she was presented as a hard-working, poor, law-abiding devout muslim mother of two, which lended to her credibility in a he-said/she-said...over him. This is why her behavior following the alleged attempted rape is CRUCIAL to the Prosecution.. Ultimately, there's little proof beyond the victim's story (since the physical evidence does lend itself to multiple interpretations), and her story is becoming less and less credible. Honestly, I find it more likely that a wealthy and powerful man would treat a woman in the manner that's alleged than that a woman would subject herself to testifying in a trial and everything that goes with that. It's not impossible, of course, but it seems to me to be unlikely. Clearly, she's lied on multiple occasions about important things, but it doesn't mean that he didn't try to rape her.
It goes without saying that many men in his type of powerful position may treat women disrespectfully, and we know many times this to be fact. Does it mean they are rapists? I don't know. From what I have read from a few maids who came forward about mistreatment, the usual scenario is lonely or horny men offer them money for sex or massages, or inappropriately proposition or flirt with them. Certainly not all of them, I'm sure... but in this instance, DSK has been accused of sexual assault before. When the accusations begin to pile up, it makes his guilt in any particular instance seem more likely. I think it's somewhat rare for women to fabricate incidents of sexual assault. My sense is that it tends to go the other way around - women underreport sexual assault because they fear that they will not be believed, don't want to relive the trauma, etc.
