Re the question posed; I do not own a gun. However, my caveat to that is that I have thought long and hard about getting one just for my own protection. Now that I've been living on my own for almost 2 years, I have seen far too much happen not to be a little worried for my own safety and that of my children's safety when they are with me every other week. I am too afraid of the potential of my own children getting hurt carelessly/on accident, but also fear I won't be able to protect us God forbid something were to happen.
Cherok, you do whatever is necessary to protect yourself and your children. There are a lot of people out there with blinders on who will tell you otherwise. That thin blue line (police) will not always be there for you when needed. You may have to take your defense in your own hands. Those who hate the thought of gun ownership will tell to just scream out, or just wait for the police, do not anger your attacker. Take care of yourself and your loves ones.
Protect yourself sweetheart. There are ways to store a gun safely, such as a gun safe. Take your time and do your research. I do not own a safe for my pistol, but I don't have kids. Guns are merely tools that are used for good more often than not. Also keep in mind that if someone breaks into your house they will most likley be armed. Do your research and make the decision on which gun is right for you. If you want a lightweight durable gun you may want to consider a glock for example. Don't waste your time with anything smaller than 40 caliber bullets, use full metal jacket rounds at the range because they are cheaper, but use hollow points for your defensive rounds because they have been proven to be more effective. http://www.gunvault.com/
While I don't have anything right now, I would like some sort of gun at some point, just because if something goes down myself and my wife(in a few months technically!) would need to survive until the cops could get to us and that is assuming we aren't held up in a room with the attacker(s) between us and the door in which cops need to come through to save us. The thought of being attacked, helpless and not able to do anything to at least save my woman drives me mad. With a gun I could at least tell her to go hide in the bathroom and call the cops while I by her some time until the cops arrive. :smt067
Agreed. Most women here dont want one. Why? I believe most women don't want to live through a child finding one and something not good happen. In my experience that is what I've heard from those who say no. Is this true?
YES! I am borderline on the fence about this issue. Like I said, I'm so worried that something could happen and if it did, I would not be able to defend myself/and my children. I have been too close to things that have happened recently. I live in the suburbs and unfortunately, THINGS HAPPEN and there are BAD PEOPLE anywhere. A few months ago, a family w/ a young child was robbed by some armed hoodlums in the neighborhood. Woke them up with a knife to their throat, stripped them down and tied them up while they robbed them. I have also seen a young child kill himself w/ a gun by accident. It's so hard to make a rational decision when it's so dangerous and so emotional one to make.
This is very unfortunate, but it belongs to a long list of things that must be kept out of the reach of children, over the counter/perscription drugs, household cleaners, glass, knives, tools, electrical conductors, lighters, alcohol and anything flammable.
I read a book written by a burgler...he said alarm systems they'll disable, an effin yapping dog they'll pass on for another house.
...and yet parents right now have your examples within reach of their children. You just have to this unconditional system, and absolute respect for the gun. Lock ALWAYS on, and/or Bullets always out and have a loader hidden if you need quick access. No Glock for me, they jam way too easily - I don't have time to unjam, that's why I went with a revolver. My ex-bf's 9MM always jammed on me at the range. Kids = no pistol for in-house protection, go with a shotgun. Unless you are an expert marksmen - and who is - no way in hell do I use my pistol as a weapon to defend against intruders with my kids in the next room. Shotgun sprays are the safest, IMO. The most important thing I feel is to create layers of protection. Sensor lights, Alarms, dog, obstacles...I let an intruder know he's going to have jump through hoops to get in my home. Waking up with him on top of me, isn't going to cut it for me and (getting) my gun.
I don't want one because I don't think they're necessary. But having a child find it is just another reason why I would never have one. I really think this is an American thing, because Australia really just doesn't have a gun culture.
America has a retarded gun culture, replete with the dumbest black men anywhere who fill each other with bullets and mentally unhinged white boys who kill out of social frustration.
I know, right?! I've always wanted one of those sawed off shot guns ..just so whenever i had to shoot, i would blast two big holes in their chest! I would be scared as hell but feel like a bad azz with a gun like that
Do people really think that 100% of burglars are murderers??? I've never assumed that, I'd assume that the majority of intruders want your possessions, not your life. It makes me feel a little ill that people enjoy the idea of shooting another human being, regardless of motive. I mean, what kind of person thinks like that? Seriously. SMH
I didn't mean to come off as crass; I believe your assumption would be closer to burglaries...and definitely would not take pleasure taking another person's life. I was just indicating that if I needed to protect myself for some reason, I would want to be sure to either scare that person or be certain my weapon of choice would be enough to keep harm away from myself and my family...not sure i would be able to shoot accurately or have the balls to pull the trigger if i needed to...
