Yay or Nay? Raising the Minimum Wage

This. Why economic conservatives still believe in trickle down economics is beyond me. I knew it didn't work in high school.

I was referring to the poor economic conservatives. They're the ones who are actually supposed to benefit from whatever it is that's supposed to be trickling down. I know the rich ones don't give a shit lol.

Agreed. But everyone here is arguing that we need higher wages. The only thing higher wages will do is force more jobs to be cut and prices to increase. The thing people need to realize is there is no perfect system. And I do believe that if you provided US corporations with a tax break for hiring US workers, many of them would do it. Apple has over $150 billion in cash and can afford to hire thousands of workers. The places they open offices are places with a great talent pool and cities that offer tax incentives.

I don't think they would do it at a high enough rate for most americans to live a comfortable life. The tax rate has dropped lower since Reagan's administration and we are where we are today. Much like any capitalist, they would hold onto the money and invest it until there was demand that they couldn't keep up with. Once that happens, they would hire people who cost less.

Apple still does most of manufacturing offshores probably due to the wages and other factors . Notice how despite the incentives, they still chose not to manufacture their computers here even though that would provide even more jobs for americans without a college degree. That says something.

 

I agree with you. The minimum wage will never be a comfortable wage. And Apple will still continue to produce products and keep some profits overseas. But even if they added 10,000 new jobs here through tax benefits...isn't it worth it? In that one campus, they are adding 3600 jobs at $53K-$74K. When you start factoring that out across multiple large corporations you will start to see big employment gains.

 

You are settling for the 3600 when they had an opportunity to bring manufacturing jobs over and could have boosted it to 10,000. I'm just pointing out that companies do what is in their interest even if that means supporting communist nations like china over the United States.

 

This. Too often it is merely about the bottom line. But there are still a few companies out there who will hold to their values, regardless of the repercussions, financial or otherwise.

Government subsidized healthcare or government subsidizing healthcare costs that leave a maximum price cap of $500 for the patient.

Mandatory paid parental leave, and mandatory paid vacation.

Free University for American citizens.


Also regulations in place to make sure greedy companies do not raise the prices of everything. Harsh punishments for white collar crime, and hiring illegal immigrants.


Regulations on banks to make it impossible for them to leave the country with their tax. Boo hoo if Paniro or more Conservative airheads cry Socialism/Communism.

Free university for American citizens? You do realize that nothing is ever free...the money still comes from somewhere. Every American would be taxed up to 80% of their income to provide free college education for millions of people.

 

Yes greatly cut our insane military budget, and increase taxes on everyone especially the rich, but hey it beats paying health insurance, and debts from school. Swedes are really not having trouble paying rent or traveling frequently in spite of the High taxes. I also did not even begin to mention benefits like receiving a stipend just for having children.


Somehow this works in the Scandinavian countries. Why can this not work in the USA besides that our Politicians will not, and that corporate lobbyists do not want this threat to their profits? You speak of this "Everyone will get Unicorns." As if the society I described is impossible in the world when I am very much here living, and seeing it.
