this is one of the major problems we are facing here in germany, too.
eventhough it seems the unemployment rate is sinking, more and more ppl are forced into work contracts with such low wages, that they depend on receiving money from the state to cover their bills.
it s not making anything better.

 

We now have a help to buy scheme that helps people buy homes for half a million pounds in Surrey.

It's a big f-ing joke, the poor have been told here, that if you live in a high rental area you are expected to move to a cheaper area, as the government can not be expected to subsidise you in more affluent area's regardless of work or family commitments.
But those rich enough to buy a property will be subsidised irregardless of where they want to buy it.

The biggest cost to our welfare budget is the working poor and the majority of us here are ignorant to the real villains/spongers in our society.
A compulsory living minimum wage would be a start, not just this voluntary bullshit that well practicing businesses have signed up to and were already offering anyway.
Also I think that zero hour contracts should be made illegal, they're bullshit and offer very little in the way of employment rights, everything is tilted to keep those struggling, still struggling and it's crap.

The problem with any kind of change here in America? Any criticism (and I mean any) of the current economic status quo will have you labeled a communist/socialist/collectivist before you even have time to blink. Combine that with the Supreme Court's latest decision on campaign finance and the problem will not get any better anytime soon.

One thing I really appreciate about this video is how it exposes Wal-Mart for exactly the kind of corporation it is. So many people are in love with low prices that they don't realize exactly how those prices are even possible. I used to work for Wal-Mart years ago and yes, it is possible to be a full-time employee and still not be able to support yourself. It is beyond ridiculous!

 

The unfortunate thing is too many people are either not capable of understanding how they're getting fucked or they've resigned themselves to believe this is just the way it is. There is absolutely no fight in people anymore. Years ago people would simply just boycott certain businesses and do without. Show them they need us more than we need them. Good luck with that shit now.

 

We can thank the culture wars for that. This country has always been trying to fight social progress but it really got to an unhealthy point back in the 80s. The marriage of economic conservatives and the religious right hit this country with a one-two punch that we'll probably never recover from.

Instead of worrying about people being able to make enough to live off of without requiring public assistance, pols would rather focus on abortion, gay marriage, and teaching creationism in science classes...this is especially true in the south where a lot of our representatives want to drag us kicking and screaming back into the stone age. And so many voters have absolutely no fucking idea that all of that is a smokescreen designed to hide that fact that corporations are basically buying the political process at a bargain basement price so that they can keep themselves rich (and get themselves richer) while the rest of us have to fight over crumbs.

But hey, we're making those poor freeloaders pull themselves up by their bootstraps even if they don't make enough to afford either the boots or the straps. Because 'Murica!

 

People can't afford to do that. Many of us don't have that luxury in this economy. We go back to places like Wal-mart because we, too, are trying to keep a roof over our heads and food in the table, not proving a point.

 

I try to shop a places like Costco and avoid Wal-Mart whenever possible. Sometimes there are things that you absolutely have to have that are hard to find anywhere else but I absolutely hate giving that company more money than I have to. Costco is a prime example of a company that does right by its employees!

 

yeah I don't buy that. I think most people are entirely too lazy to look for other options. They go to Walmart because its easier not because its the only way to meet their needs. Unless you live in the absolute middle of nowhere where there are no other stores for miles I think its possible to go to other places like Costco or other spots who try to make prices affordable without screwing their employees so much they need to be on food stamps.

 

The most annoying thing is that I see no way in which to stop and change this shit. There are far too many anchors who are stopping progress with their disruptive childish thinking that is rarely ever rooted in fact.
There are too many white folk (sorry have to call a spade a spade) that are obsessed with the idea of the welfare state being occupied by nothing but blacks and illegal hispanics. They absolutely refuse to see that its mostly whites that are on welfare and they refuse to see that's not even the problem, the fact we spend tax dollars subsidizing companies who pay no taxes yet refuse to pay living wages so that we aren't hit once but twice with costs. And the biggest problem is unnecessary military spending, but they want to complain about teacher's tenure and pensions which yes cost a lot of money but are not even a drop in the bucket in comparison. They would rather side with the rich who are royally fucking them because they share similar skin tones and are praying for a return to an era where skin tone was the only prerequisite to a good life.

Even if you didn't want to stock pile you can trade with friends and neighbors...I save sooooo much money with coupons...I give away extra items to my dog sitter...or the local pantry...

I about had a fit the other day when my son picked up a gallon of milk at Walgreens for 4.19 when I can but it for half at costco

Don't be fooled by big box or family size...always look at price per ounce etc

 

Hand to God I seriously don't like you on any level but God bless you you're absolutely right. There are so many ways to save money in such a way you aren't a slave to the "low prices" at Walmart.

Costco doesn't work for me. I don't need things in bulk, nor do I have the space to store stuff. I grocery shop mainly at Aldi but I do pick up things for my parents at Wal-mart because it's on the way to their house. I pick up things there that I I can't get at Aldi. I do what I need to do to keep my head above water.

 

Having been into the office of DCF a few times, I see a wide variety of people in line to get help. I see black, white, Latino, Jew and Gentile, young and old. Everybody in line had families(in fact, families were in the lines, too). And these lines were quite long and the DCF office staff was often short-handed.

 

I buy very little processed foods, so couponing isn't relevant for me either. I hit up our Dollar Generals in the area for non-food items like paper towels, t.o., cleaners, etc. But if I'm looking for sheets or a phone card for my dad, I pop into Walmart.
