Well, the poor get food stamps, free housing, free insurance, childcare expenses taken care of, etc, etc....I would consider that help.

It's the middle class who are actually fucked. They have to work 40-60 hours a week to live like a poor person....and pay for the insurance, food, housing that they would get for free if they just stopped trying.

 

The former middle class are just considered the working poor. Any situation where losing a job could leave you homeless in a month or less is poverty in my opinion

 

The middle class is a consumerist abstraction. You are either selling your labor for capital in the marketplace or your capital is being used to generate more capital. Working class or capitalist class.

 

Exactly and if you are part of the proletariat you are at a complete disadvantage because the modes of capitalism (modes of production) will always have more value than you. I am really beginning to see the advantages of working for yourself in this world or a mixture of the two. We are seeing now more than ever that we as people who don't own capital and/or production are fucked

And we should also start to seriously contemplate alternative forms: partnerships, collective ownership, worker ownership, etc, because being capitally disadvantaged we will need to work in concert to acquire means of production.

 

It wasn't by luck. I got a bachelor's degree and when I didn't think I'd have luck with a job....I got another degree in a field where I knew I could get a job! I should've skipped the BS...literally and figuratively...and went straight to nursing. Everyone told me to do that when I was younger, but I was a rebel and thought nurses were mostly slaves to men. HAHA.

 

True but I still see some middle ground in the who you know game. A person that lacks capital but knows the right people can be at the higher end of the working class spectrum, but its knowing the right people that puts you in that category, not how much your job pays.

I have encountered people whose public service career made them attractive targets for partnership opportunities by businessmen who wanted access to the regulatory apparatus they had acquired during their public career. I love the 5 special priced fruit/veg every week, I bought Asparagus and Mangetout for 69p the other week, brilliant.

I haven't stepped into Asda (owned by a subsidiary of Wal Mart) for nearly 2 months now, too bloody expensive and I don't like how big they are.
Also very tight, when I was school fundraising we asked them to donate a raffle prize as we were the nearest school to there store and they wouldn't!

But Morrisons and Tesco did, what a bunch of cheap bastards Asda/Walmart is.

 

Aldi pays staff more than minimum wage here aswell starting at £7.95ph for store assistant rising to £9.50ph yet staff at Asda (owned by a subsidiary of Wal-mart) in the same role are on minimum wage £6.50ph

annnnddd they also do not provide uniforms, they have to be paid for by the employee and they tell the employee to claim it from the European Job fund if they can (My friend works at the Jobcentre)
