Fights occur in nearly 30-percent of hockey games, and no one bats an eyelash, but Richard Sherman believes the reaction would be much different if there was as much hand-to-hand violence during a football game.

The Seattle Seahawks cornerback said Wednesday during a panel on “Social Capital of the Savvy Athlete” at Harvard Business School that a double standard exists between race and fighting in sports. Houston Texans running back Arian Foster, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and former NFL player and NFL players association president Domonique Foxworth also participated in the panel.

“It’s almost the angry black man syndrome, especially football players,” Sherman said. “I couldn’t imagine if there was a huge brawl on a football field, what the consequence would be, what the comments would be. There was just a huge brawl in baseball, a huge brawl. I haven’t heard about it since.”

“Hockey they fight every day,” Houston Texans running back Arian Foster chimed in.

“There was a day when they broke a record,” Sherman said. “They slapped the puck away two seconds into a game. Everyone said, ‘Man, this is good hockey.’”

“The refs skate around and just watch it,” Foster said. “If we fight, it’s like ‘Those animals.’”

“‘They’re monkeys, look at them,'” Sherman mocked.

Sherman can only imagine what the media’s reaction would be if a fight happened in football similar to Sunday’s brawl between the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates.

“That’s the frustrating part, the double standard, the triple standard,” Sherman said. “The way an athlete is viewed. The way an African-American athlete is viewed in football or basketball, the predominantly African-American sports. Just a brawl — imagine a brawl happening in football, and imagine the coverage.”

It’s rare to see a fists thrown during a football game, but Andre Johnson and Cortland Finnegan’s fight from 2010 is the most notable from recent years.

 

He's right, that's one of the many reasons I don't support the NFL anymore. They will never see an single penny from me ever again.

Let's be real about it, most hockey players can't fight.

If you allowed 6'5, 300# men to go after each other in games, players would be on life support on Sundays.

Fighting was never a big part of the NFL before the sport became integrated. It's not some conspiracy against Black athletes why they aren't allowed to fight in the NFL.

Very few professional sports condone fighting as a part of the status quo.

Sherman needs to be careful about projecting racial animus from Whites onto hypothetical situations that would be universally criticized no matter what color the athlete was.

 

C'mon now....6'5 300lb football players being allowed to fight wouldn't send anybody on life support.

Most of those guys can't fight worth a shit anyway and most of them aren't 300lbs.

They're smaller though as a group. You aren't going to see too many fights in the NHL where one guy outweighs the other by 30-50#.

I really don't need to see someone like 320# Ndamukong Suh try to beat the shit out of 220# Aaron Rodgers.

And hockey guys can't fight. Some of the biggest pussy fights I've ever seen are in hockey. Maybe it the skates and guys can't really plant and hit that hard on the ice.

Just because you aren't soft doesn't mean you can fight.

The level of violence in the NFL is several steps above the NHL, which is a byproduct of the NFL placing such a premium on size, raw power, strength and explosiveness.

You give me 10 random 215#ers from the NFL in a battle royale with 10 random hockey players, and I think the NFL guys win that brawl.

 

Spoken like someone who hasn't been hit in a very long time if at all. First off NHL players suffer a shit load of concussions too its a fricking contact sport fam. And I don't care if an unskilled fighter hits you its gonna hurt even if they're fifty pounds lighter. Shit my 10 year old nephew could hit you square in the nose and break it.
And football aside look at basketball which gets the same harsh criticism for "thug" behavior and fighting. Its clear distinction between sports that are predominately white and black. Hockey has far more fights but far less criticism.

 

People wouldn't give two shits if there was a brawl on the football field. They happen, and players have been ejected. Hockey's image is like boxing's - punching is expected. It's not even an ejectable offense - it's a 5-minute penalty (which is a killer).

But really, why would grown men who get paid millions to beat each other up on the field, want to ass-beat each other when the clock stops? They'd be called idiots, not animals.

And I bet if smart-mouthed Sherman got punched in the jaw every-time he trash-talked all up in someone's face on the field, he'd be calling his assaulter all types of names right after. :smt088

Basketball is a contact sport. Hockey is a contact sport.

Football is a collision sport.

It's against the rules to fight in the NFL. It has nothing to do with the race of the players.

It was against the rules in the 30's, 40's and 1950s when professional football wasn't really integrated.

Sherman seems to be arguing a hypothetical as if he wishes NFL players were allowed to fight during games, then is upset because the viewing public would consider Black athletes thugs for fighting.

Someone needs to remind Sherman there's a term used for hockey players who have a rep for fighting; they call them GOONS, which has been adopted as an alternate 'hood term for thugs.lol

Sherman must have forgotten about this incident.


If 6'5, 325# OT Trent Williams had decided to do more than PUSH Sherman in the face(without his helmet on!!), Sherman would have been killed.

No we don't need sanctioned fighting in football. I don't care what race the majority of the players are.


BTW the worst fights I've ever had growing up were in a football lockerroom.

Yeah in football more often than not it's the relatively smaller, mouthy guys who piss off the big dudes who can really do damage. They wouldn't be like hockey fights where the guys are all roughly the same size.

I remember reading when Terrell Owens and DE Hugh Douglass almost got into a fight in the Eagles lockerroom. Teammates broke that up real quick because no one wanted to see T.O. get his face caved in.

 

A 300lb guy can get ktfo just like anybody else.

Nine times out of ten the dude with the 80-100# advantage is gonna win most fights assuming the smaller guy doesn't have any particular specific fighting skills.

Richard Sherman: Redskins Name Proves NFL Wouldn't Ban Owner Over Racist Comments

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman does not believe the NFL would act as decisively as the NBA if a team owner were caught making racist comments. Sherman cited the controversial name of the football team in the nation's capital as evidence that the NFL would not have issued a lifetime ban to a team owner caught making bigoted remarks like those that earned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling exile from the NBA.

"No I don’t," Sherman responded when asked by Sean Gregory of Time.com if NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would react to an owner's racist comments like NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. "Because we have an NFL team called the Redskins. I don’t think the NFL really is as concerned as they show. The NFL is more of a bottom line league. If it doesn’t affect their bottom line, they’re not as concerned."

The outspoken Stanford University graduate told Time.com that he hopes Sterling's lifetime ban from the NBA will help get the discussion about changing the Redskins name started again. Ever since Silver announced the punishment for Sterling, some have tried to start the conversation surrounding the name change.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) urged the NFL last week to respond to racism like the NBA did and force Redskins owner Dan Snyder to change the team name.

"I wonder today ... how the leadership of the National Football League, the NFL, that money-making machine -- I wonder if they have taken notice of the NBA's decisive action," Reid said. "How long will the NFL continue to do nothing, zero, as one of its teams bears a name that inflicts so much pain on Native Americans?"

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, who helped the NBA players' union during the Sterling scandal, also joined the conversation. The former NBA player thinks a new name for the Washington football team "should strongly be considered."
