So yeah, tying in with other threads about teenagers legally having consensual sex with 'adults' and the theory of not being mature enough to make such decisions

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articl...ults-teens-deserve-the-right-to-vote-too.html

You see some of the same arguments such as teens aren't mature enough, or educated enough to partake in such matters. HOWEVER, importantly, you see the realization that adults are also subject to not be mature or educated enough to conduct 'grown folk business,' such as voting or having sex (gotdamn look at the amount of unwanted pregnancies caused by adults and fucking deadbeat parents)

    Hmmmm

So a 14 year old is mature enough to choose who he/she wants to vote for, just because he/she pays taxes? Isn't this blogger's benchmark no different than the benchmark that was toffered that only adults who are property owners can vote? How is this different that only teens under 18 who pay taxes...can vote? What about the other disenfranchised 14 year olds and 15 year olds who aren't allowed to vote.

Furthermore, what about the outcry that there are not enough jobs for teenagers to work in order for them to be able to vote? Yes, I see this going to the Supreme Court.

Hey, we have an age requirement to become President in this country. Screw it, let's just allow teenagers to run. Heck, they don't even have to be Americans, just have immigrant teens who work vote and run for the Presidency, too. :smt002

Clinging to exaggeration doesn't help your argument

Bottom line is that many adults aren't 'fit' to vote by the standards of different groups which are against teenage voters, yet the adults somehow get a pass simply because they are over 18 (and somehow being 18 makes you more fit than someone 16 or 17)

It's a call to reexamine why we set age limits to where they currently are, when in reality age often has no real bearing on the ability for people to handle certain responsibilities.

There are a LOT of uneducated people making decisions best left to the educated, who are protected by legal age limits

The truth is everyone remembers when they were teens. They remember all the stupidity that was done. You don't want that same maturity making important votes. There is also the issue of parents having an influence on their vote.

I realize some people never grow up to be responsible but I imagine that there are far less of them than irresponsible teens.

however to be blunt, young people even given the right don't vote to the degree that they should.

But how is this actually quantified and why is 18 the magic number? If you can not establish set criteria (other than age) and ensure that people meet or surpass it, how can you justify age limits and exclusion of <18 voters?

The age of 18 is likely to be there because of some illogical reason. I think that most scientist point to mid 20's that an adult is an adult(i.e. nothing is in development stages.) I would push the age to vote to 25. You can't really have qualifications though. People mature differently. You could make a test but that also would be unfair. for now it what it is.

Honestly when I was 13 I had more political knowledge than a large number of adults. I have met plenty of people while being in "The majority age" that voted for stupid reasons or didn't vote at all. I do not see why there shouldn't be a system where a person under 18 couldn't have their vote deemed valid if they were able to pass a special civics test or their maturity/reason for voting was scrutinized by a poll worker.

As for the age of consent. I think we should catch up with most of the developed world and lower our age of consent to 15-16. Fortunately my family were not prudish when it came to Sex and would often leave condoms for me.

It also is absurd that at age 18 I could buy a handgun and even join the army but not a beer.

Are plenty of people at the age of 16 immature and moronic? Yes, but so are a great deal of university students that are capable of voting.

Plenty of morons over the age of 30....but you better dare not infringe upon their civil liberties

'Why did you vote for Obama?'

    'Oh, because he's black'

I had arguments with coworkers over this because they admitted not knowing much about where he actually stood on anything and voted for him because he was black. Even worse, when you challenged them on obamas shortcomings while in the whitehouse, they literally didn't care because of his skin color

The whole 16 is too young to vote because they're immature is highly flawed, when you refuse to hold adult voters to the same standard (oh wait, u mean there are no standards by which adults are judge for maturity)

If ur over 18 with no gotdamn education and a pulse, u can vote...ain't that America!
