Acting white means 'this'; Acting black means 'that'

Now, I have to finally address it. After reading through a lot of the threads in this site again and again, no one can really define or sum up what these things really mean or what they are supposed to mean, and with the kind of posters registered in this website, I can't tell what is acting white vs. acting black, so what is it???

Com' on, enlighten me. I'm clueless on this one.

 

I think it has always been based on stereotypes: Jive talking black people, square white people etc.
The sad part is people who have access to the tools of knowledge will still base their thought process on stereotypes. Although there are some who push stereotypes of any kind to serve their own end.

People are people and yet we never seem to apply that to our dealings with others on a group level.

 

That kind of profiling has serious consequences going forward. As each faction squares off and become hardened against the other it severely compromises the group as a whole. With others coming together as a solid block, the errors and effects of indulging in this kind of profiling is going to prove highly costly in the near future.

People are very diverse, so the behavior of the girl you mentioned is definitely not an anomaly simply because she's white. I guess it becomes natural to want to accept some as prim and proper and others as crude and crass based on skin color regardless of all the examples that prove otherwise. Some are more accepting and comfortable stereotyping one race in a positive manner no matter what, and doing the exact opposite all depending on skin tone.

 

eh!? I am mixed. I tend to take on more 'black features' than 'white features'; also identified as "black", so does that mean I get a free pass to act like both? But wait....growing up, I was never exposed to "acting black." :shock:

This is what I am getting at: as I have said many times before, there is no objective way to gage one's behaviour by the colour of their skin. It's all ideologues rubbish which is a substitute for thought.

 

In my experience, it all comes down to stereotypes or what the majority of said race is known to engage in. These ideologies become the measuring stick by which everyone in that race should act in order to 'fit the bill.' This will be a view heavily believed by someone who did not grow up around a lot of different races. It seems like something that shouldn't require hard evidence in order to be understood. Humans are going to act differently regardless of their race, color or creed.

We were not put here to behave the same way or even think alike, so any nonsense about so and so doesn't act white enough or black enough is null and void.

So, I am utmost right then. There is no way to define someone's behavior by skin hue, but what about these types of conversations?:



White Girl 1: I'm dating this guy right now at my college, and he is sooo cute... and cool too.

White Girl 2: Really? What's he like?

White Girl 1: Um, I don't know. I guess I would say that he's really thuggish or ghetto.

White Girl 2: What do you mean by that?

White Girl 1: Well, because, he acts like, real ghetto.

White Girl 2: Ghetto?

White Girl 1: Yeah, you know, like a black guy.

White Girl 2: *puzzled* Um, is he half-black or something?

White Girl 1: Not that I know of, but I'm just sayin'.

White Girl 2: Saying what?

White Girl 1: I'm just sayin' that he acts ghetto like a black guy.

White Girl 2: Wait a minute... how do black guys act ghetto?

White Girl 1: Well, you know, becuase of the way he talks and stuff, like a lot of black guys do.

White Girl 2: I don't know any black guys who act like that.

White Girl 1: Well, um, I don't mean all of them, like, well, you know what I mean.

White Girl 2: No, I don't. What are you talking about?

White Girl 1: *sighs* Ugh! OK, let me put it like this-

White Girl 2: Um, I don't think that we should even be talking about this sort of thing.

White Girl 1: Hold on, let me explain it a little better!

White Girl 2: I gotta go. *grabs her things, gets up and leaves*

White Girl 1: Aw, com' on! Come back!



This is ONLY an example of what can be overheard in places throughout America, and read over the Internet in various sites.

 

i have such a hard time acting black, being black is easier

 

yep, it has happened all of my life. or by whites, "you are not like them, you are different". I am like Whaaa, who is "them". I am as black as them and happy. I just dont fit their stereotype.

 

I'm not surprised in the least. Many of them actually do not see anything wrong with themselves or their culture no matter what leaks out.
