After reading it just do a bit of research on Americo-Liberians and their rule in Liberia and you would get to know that the behavioural attitude of human beings are the same when situations change

These are freed Black men and children of slaves who witnessed or experienced the harrowing times of slavery and were actually encouraged to go back to Africa because some southerners found it repugnant that former slaves were now free. What do they do when they get to Africa? Replicate what the white man did to them on the natives. Human nature for you

 

So true, use to say the same thing about Irish and Italian immigrants here. They felt what it was like to be oppressed but as soon as they were considered white they couldn't to treat others like sub human.

There's also some rumor floating around that africa (and well as just about anywhere else) practiced some form of slavery before...you know....slavery

They are not rumours.Some African kings and warriors were active participants in the slave trade. The gist of this thread is to point the arrant hypocrisy of the human being to shout oppression when being oppressed but turn around and oppress people when they are in the same position as their oppressors. I thought you were complaining about a skew in reportage concerning the bad things white people do against what black people do. Or does it only pertain to happenings in America?

Great point, Appiah. Two of the most dysfunctional states in Africa are former slave settler states - Liberia and Sierra Leone. The former slaves formed a distinct social caste and oppressed the hell out the indigenous people. Settler states are generally oppressive though, because the original inhabitants aren't going to just allow themselves to be expropriated. South Africa, anyone?

 

Well if you suppress the hell out of a large group for over 133 years bad things happen to you.

Totally correct about the settler thing Ore but what is more galling about this is the fact that these were slaves who had been oppressed and should have known better. With the South Africa issue they were white and had never been discriminated against.

 

A solid allotment of education is to be extracted from your piece. ....but I believe we must also come away with the positive notion that we have had hundreds of years to rectify and improve that history of flawed humanity. ....
