Both points are true.

Despite both being the President of the United States neither one is/was so arrogant to act like they could make some mistakes or misspeak. They did/have not gone around spreading unsubstantiated stories nor did/have beliefs an 'alternate' history.

Even though he may not be popular George W. Bush like his father, and like Pres. Obama had the ability to laugh at himself.

The inability to show any humility or to just laugh it off as a simple human error is a serious character flaw to say the least.

 

The modern GOP platform really have no room for people who are either Rockefeller or moderate Republicans. They have to sway to the reactionary and bat-shit fascist. This is the issue with the current GOP - they are phasing out diversity and bringing in purity. In one way it's good in a sense that they want uniformity and more likely to vote on that, but at the same time would distance their other fellow members and not include them. This sort of litmus test would marginalize the party ultimately.

In other words, the GOP wants to go further to the right and become a batshit party.

 

I actually feel like the GOP is unsustainable as a coherent political party because it contains two major factions that want things that are not only different, but truly work at cross purposes.

There is still the traditional American conservative element that wants a small government. These are the John Locke types who want to minimize state intervention in stuff like the economy and the private sphere (for them, our private lives are the sphere of freedom).

On the other hand, you have social conservatives who want a very big state, at least with respect to people's private lives. They want the state to intervene in what the John Locke types view as our private lives for the purpose of imposing a particular set of moral standards (prohibiting abortion, defining marriage as between a man and a woman, etc).

One faction wants the state to be small. The other ones the state to be large and interventionist. How long can those two groups co-exist within the framework of a single political party?

 

That is an outstanding insight Nerdy. There is a reason there are so many political groups in Europe, two parties cannot really provide for all the differences in opinions,concerns and values.

 

True not everyone is liberal but,those Black right wingers must realize that the freedoms they have today came from the bodies of liberals since conservatives does not lend a hand in letting not only Black men to vote but to date and marry WW too.

 

There is a great deal of truth in that. Black conservatives will tell you that Republicans were instrumental in passing Civil Rights legislation, which is true. However they are equating Republicans with conservatism as if the two have always been synonymous with the other or even absolute on all issues.

Anyone can be racially liberal while being fiscally conservative or support strong national defense while being in favor of universal healthcare. But today there elements in our society that say otherwise.

For example Republican Sen. Everett McKinley Dirksen of Illinois and Republican Sen. Thomas Kuchel of California backed civil rights laws but, like Democratic Presidents LBJ and JFK they all believed in strong national defense and all backed the war in Vietnam.

Sen. Dirksen said
"Victor Hugo wrote in his diary substantially this sentiment, 'Stronger than all the armies is an idea whose time has come.' The time has come for equality of opportunity in sharing of government, in education, and in employment. It must not be stayed or denied."

True leaders do not define themselves by titles and names that 'box them in' or limit there ability to lead.

These leaders realized just as Lincoln did one hundred years earlier that there are times when morality has to be placed above politics, names and titles.
