Gov. Fiscal Hawk Brown - A Surplus in the Liberal State of California My Take After years of economic turmoil plaguing the great state of California, the Fiscal Hawk known as Gov. Jerry Brown has created a budget surplus in this season. For somebody with some high fiscal conservative, penny-pinching credentials, Brown has proven once more that he knows how to work the state of California. I'll be interested in seeing how the state will manage itself in the next four years. If anything, I think California will experience a little bit of a recovery beyond reproach. Who's to say that an unabashed liberal like Brown strictly adheres to one ideology and effectively pull it off?

This is his second time that he's Governor. The last time he did it, he managed to balance the budget within his first term and that was a major achievement. As for legalizing marijuana...the real issue is that the federal laws still outlaws marijuana, so the states would still have to go around some of those measures, even if they are fully legalized in a state-by-state basis. But, I do agree that he should consider legalizing it, but it was tried with Prop. 19. What more could be done except getting lawmakers to vote on it? That's an impossible task.
Maybe I'm the glass is half empty kind of person, or I'm just being realistic. There aren't a lot of lobbyists for marijuana legalization and so few in Congress would endorse decriminalizing the measure. But...there is a slither of hope. It's a matter of "exchanging powers."
He did it through cutting every program imaginable, raising sales tax to the highest in the nation at 7.5%, and forcing 3.6 million people to leave the state since he's been in office (that is 10% of the state population)!! This didn't come through job creation and there are no long term revenue generating plans. So I will give him a hand clap for cutting spending, but he still has a lot of work to do before California is thriving again.
Being a major state and all, it's sort of impossible to find a proper solution to the whole ordeal. He's pushing back legislators for increased spending and it tackling it through more means. It's a long term investment, but in the end, I think within his second term, there will be a greater push for putting money in proper sectors.
