Sorry, I wasn't sure where to put this one... Religion, politics or News, it kind of fits in all of the above.

I am sure you heard about Pharmacists refusing to give out birth control since it is against their personal believe. Recently one Wal-Mart employee got fired not only for refusing but also for hindering his co-workers to dispense the pill. He tried to sue but as far as I know Wal-Mart won.

Do you think pharmacists have the right to refuse filling a prescription if it's against their personal believes?

I honestly think that if your personal views prevent you from performing basic duties of your job you should look for a different job which you would find more agreeable. Why should the majority of people be inconvenienced because of some backward extremist?

i certainly do, especially if it is against ones moral values or ethics(religious or not religious values).

But then why not choose another profession in which you won't run into that issue? Don't get me wrong, we all have to make decisions at our jobs every day and our believes and ethics help us make these decisions. What I don't understand is why one would go into a field knowing it will become a problem. It is not like birth control was just now invented, it's been around long enough.

So next thing is you have a Jehova Whitness nurse and he/ she refuses to give you a blood transfusion?

because before it wasnt an issue. one could decide what was moral or ethical and not have to step over those boundaries.

my profession i often have to make those decisions and when it comes to breaking my moral code, i have to do what is right not what someone decide is.

with the issue being presented to the pharmacists is that they are NOW mandated to do it by law, while before they were not.

    Very interesting issue...

Being a pharmacist isn`t supposed to be like being a priest or a pastor, there shouldn`t be any moral, religious or other motives that justify a pharmacist refusing to fill a prescription or to give a medicine to a patient, unless it is undoubtedly clear that the medicine will endanger the patient`s life. !

Unless it`s clearly something extremely dangerous or poisonous AND/OR the patient really looks irresponsible, drunk or on drugs, the vendor or the pharmacist has the DUTY to give the patient the medicine!

Morals and religious values should be personal, and we can`t violate people`s freedom by forcing them to go by our own values!!!!

No, I do not feel they should have the right to refuse my medication. This has been an ongoing problem here he Tx for over 4 years now.

I take birth control pills for migrains. My migrains are usually triggered by hormone fluxes, so they limit my periods to just two a year. The thought that some idiot could tell me I can't have my medicine because he doesnt believe in pharmasuedical birth contol is assanine.

I have also noticed there has never been a case of someone refusing to fill viagra. That isnt a coincidence. Womens rights are under attack.

I agree. Either you do your duty regardless of what you believe in, or you DON'T. Bottom line. Somethin' tells me that dude is in the wrong line of work.

No it isn't their right to refuse to sell those drugs to anyone. Unless they have professional reasons. Like the drugs being dangerous or defective. And thats not the case. Everyone has the right to express their personal beliefs. But when you run a business. Its not your right to force your beliefs on someone else. If these religious zealots want to tell people what to do. Then they can go to a dictatorial country. Or go start a cult on an island somewhere.Thats why I hate when far right religious people are elected. They need to check that bs at the door.

that wasnt the issue nor the problem. It was the court saying that a person, not the religious right, who is a pharmacist must provide birth control pill . It had nothing to do with any elected officials.

i feel the same way about non religious and secularist, mate!! the same way :D

At the end of the day, much that I wish I could force my extremist views on other people (I'm an extreme pacifist amongst other things), the way that life in liberal society is designed to operate is that some people do things their way, and others another way, and somehow we manage to make these different ways co-exist. But when someone picks to do a job which involves performing a duty, be it dispensing drugs or protecting other people from crime, they should stick to it and not impose their own views of how to live onto other people's lives. I think it's absolutely disgusting that this has been going on, and moreover it scares me how far it's got - from the stage of doctors refusing to perform abortions, which was bad enough, to refusing to give out birth control pills? You can't even argue that that is sensible on health grounds as people are simply not prescribed birth control if it would disagree with them, and many need it for reasons other than sex - it's an example of controlling other people's actions with reference to your own morality which is simply autocratic and infantilising.

So no, I don't agree with it, and I think he should be sacked.

well, thats true, but the rules were not there before and just became a new court ruling but another one on appeal(since in this country it is about laws) could render the first mute. so it is not about the job they picked, but about what is being forced on them to do.

Are you talking about when the court ordered catholic charities birth contorl under their prescription coverage? Catholic church is one of the worst hypocritical messes around. The FDA is one of the main problems why plan B isn't in stores. Even though alot of organizations, universities, etc have proven it safe. Even employees of the FDA left because of the political bs from that. But the truth of the matter is these people have no right to force their views on someone else. I don't care if they are liberal, conservative or whatever.

thats right, i agree, so one should not seek out catholic charities if they dont like that approach to assistance. they help homeless folks, poor people, and all kinds of people in need, but they dont force them so I agree--they shouldnt force people to sell or promote abortion pills

Too funny Fly Girl, I thought the exact same thing about Viagra.

Also, Plan B... yes- that is a pretty sad story... There was an interesting article in the Washington Post last week, I will see if I can find it and post it here. It was about a woman's struggle to get Plan B, she couldn't obtain it in time, got pregnant and ended up having an abortion, that was a real sad story.

I HATE the term abortion pills, it's emotive and unhelpful. If you mean the 72 hour emergency contraception, it's not an abortion pill because there is nothing there to abort, all it achieves is that if an egg is implanted in the womb at the time that you have sex it prevents the egg being fertilised, within the time people take it there is very little chance of fertilisation actually taking place and even if it does, you're getting rid of a matter of a couple of cells, less than you do every time you wash yourself in the bath!

    Ridiculous.

yes, whatever it is called, it should not be forced to be given out any more than someone should be forced to promote abstinence. It should be determined by the individual pharmacist.

truly, it is ridiculous. to force anyone to have to promote such behavior by giving out the abortive measures, however it is defined. Thank goodness we dont have socialized, universal healthcare here.

in britian i am sure it is your choice though, so i will not speak about that countries procedures. :D

Because the availability of health care to everyone promotes so many social evils.

It does? I wouldnt think so, but I will take your word for it. I just dont think that universal health care should be provided, anymore than state run education. People who dont like the wealthy or the middle class, but want their money to support educating their children. People who dont like conservatives or liberal peoples views but want them to pay for their health care. No, I think it really is a bad thing. but I think a diversity of opinions on the subject matter is very healthy.
