Francisco Aruca was one of the key figures in developing, against all the odds and an extremist segment of the Cuban-American community in South Florida, a balanced dialogue on Cuba - U.S. relations. His clearheaded, fresh commentary, in both English and Spanish, was essential in opening up a progressive space for the free expression of ideas, without fear of reprisal from el exilio, for Spanish speakers in general and Cuban-Americans in particular. His work also contributed greatly to the greater engagement of progressive elements of the Latino community with African-American, white American and other groups. His work and the work of those like him played and continues to play a significant role in the growing progressive shift within Latino community politics toward openness and collaboration. His voice, insight, intelligence, warmth and humor will be missed. R.I.P.
