This is gonna sound kinda weird, but giving a speech, especially if your a politician, has little to do with just speaking. Politicians have to be extremely careful about what they say because the most innocent statement or phrase (Michelle Obama, "Im proud of my country" gaff) can be twisted into something sounding completely different than what you intended. But with a prewritten speech and a teleprompter, you eliminate much of that problem.

The thing about bush and mccain is that even with a teleprompter and prewritten speech, they sound like idiots.
(...or maybe they are and we falsely assumed they were intelligent.)

You don't become editor of Harvard's Law Review by being a bumbling idiot (especially if you come from a modest background and don't have aristocratic, old money New England ancestry).

I think McCain's problem is not what he says but how he says it. His voice is a little too high pitched and his delivery isn't very forceful. There's no urgency...I don't feel a call to action. McCain is smart but having a military background instead of one in law means that he will never be as good as Obama when it comes to sending a verbal message.

Bush has that personal touch and charisma....why else would he be elected? He's not overly 'booksmart' but your average businessman is not typically a Mensa member anyway....Bush's business background means that his impact won't come from oratory or debating etc. but rather how he can connect with someone on a personal level during conversation.

Obama stammers when he talks because he knows that he has more to lose....he can't confuse Sunni's and Shi'ite's like John McCain and get away with it. The brotha man can't simply be equal to the white man...he must be better...that's a fact in the USA....the margin of how much better a black man has to be has shrunken...but he still must be better.

57 states????....I simply cannot understand how he could have made such a [stupid] mistake. The only explanation would be a lack of sleep. But shoudlnt his team allow him to rest sufficiently prior to major public appearances?...I guess, i cant really be pissed cuz that was just a small mistake .As [stupid] as it might have been, the only flaw it exposed Obama of havig is a lack of knowledge regarding American history and geography.

But a guy running for PRESIDENT (of all things] should be OBSESSED with such shit and should know WAY MORE than the average citizen about his country. But it appears that even 10th graders know more than Obama.

and Chosen, I think youre a smart guy, but I cant believe you fail to see through this guy’s bullshit???....he’s a liar ,man, cant you see this?

Im not arguing against his editorial proficiency as he was elected President of the law review at Harvard..However, I read somewhere that, this election came about AFTER there was an elimination of grade point average as being the prime dictator of electoral qualifications….therefore we have to consider other factors that might played a role in his election at harvard- which calls for a stricter analysis of the manner by which he was elected…...ofcourse I wont get too deep into that analysis because i dont have the time..... however what i can tell you is the color of his skin (i.e affimartve action) had more than a lil to do with it.

Im not saying he's an idiot, but lets face it, his so called "high" intelligence is nothing more than a mirage.

Bush seems sharper than him, but only by a few, tiny points

Dude if you wanna compare George W. Bush to someone, you should try comparing him to former NY Knicks head coach Isaiah Thomas. Thomas ran what was once one of the NBA's proudest and most storied franchises into the ground.

He never had a winning record; he'd lost the respect of his players, Knicks fans, and the media as a whole. He drafted poorly, and he brought in various free agents that never panned out.

Not to mention various scandals that led to bad P.R. and even bad press all while under his regime. All of theses examples sound eerily familiar to what George W. Bush has done to this country.

You're probably one of the few imbeciles left who actually believe that Bush was a great leader.

Man, you're really talking out of your ass. Did affirmative action account for the fact that he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Columbia and Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Law in addition to his position on the law review? His GPA and test scores were more than sufficient to be admitted to both schools and he didn't list his race on the applications.

As for the "57 states" gaffe. I'm pretty sure that was due to sleep deprivation from being awake upwards of 20 hours a day during what was an extremely contentious primary. It's quite possible that he confused the number of Democratic primaries and caucuses (of which there were 57 total) with whatever number of states he meant to say that his campaign had visited. You think he doesn't know how many fucking states there are in the US? Really? Jesus.

As for your statement about W. being sharper than Obama, the assertion is so ludicrous that I don't even know how to respond to it if it was written in earnest.

ETA: Jellybird nailed it when he wrote that Obama has to be measured in his speeches and sometimes stammers because the slightest gaffe (e.g. the "57 states" comment that you're so hung up on) will be played over and over again in the corporate media while McCain gets a free pass like he did for this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDIAsS9VXiM&e

Or all of the times that he has confused sunnis and shiites, claimed that the nation of Yugoslavia still existed, claimed that Putin was the President of Germany and then there was this gem:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2y8dYwq01g

If you think Obama is dunce for graduating in the top 1% of class at University, I wonder how you rate a man who was ranked 894 of 899 in his.

You don’t get it do you? Im not a fucking republican. Where in my post have I said anything in favour of Mccain, or Bush?...The question was whether Obama made better speeches than bush, I then provided speeches from both candidates so you could arise your own conclusion.Ofcourse obamas academic records are imperative and can't be dismissed, however it seems you are putting too much emphasis on it. I think while Presidents have a solid sets of paper work when it comes to decision making etc, more often than not, it's not their academic ability that matters as much as it is the experience and leadership that make them the most effective. Obama would be a good leader if he had more experience or if he knew more than his fellow man, or if he could think on his feet, but that’s obviously not the case.

You have provided mild cases of Obamas sheer ignorance of the most elementary sets of historical data that even 10th graders know. And you know what I say to that???..To me an intelligent person [as obama apparanetly is] will never, EVER EVER, talk about something he knows not of. He would first conduct a research PRIOR to opening his big mouth, but apparently that’s not the case with obama, whos primary ability is to memorize paperwork……and not think on his feet

The reason for the 57 state "gaffe" could have been sleep deprivation , but I fail to understand for the life of me why he failed to atleast correct himself after saying he had visited 57 states. An intelligent person ALWAYS hears what he says, and whether what he is saying is logical, but apparently that’s not the case with Obama because he went on with that speech as if he didn’t even hear that he had said 50 instead of 40…..what the fuck? .

The fact of the matter is that yes, Obama did graduate with a MAGNA at Harvard, and while the fact that no law firms wanted to even hire him at the time of his graduation due to his apparent ignorance should be ignored, I think such graduation credentials are certainly not the achievements of a stupid individual.

However im not saying Obama is stupid. Im just saying that his "high" intelligence is a mirage. And his High GPA might have been due to having an exceptional memorizing ability, or plagiarism, because when it comes to delivering, he fails with a capital F. His apparent grasp on historical facts as illustrated by his [stupid gaffes] is being revealed as questionable at best and embarrassing at worst. In one of his most popular gaffes, he mentions having an uncle who 'liberated' Auschwitz,, when the fact is….NO American soldier did anything of such [the guy doesnt even know who liberated Auschwitz--or he is a liar]…ofcourse such gaffes could be excused as typical political blunders- but in Obama's case, it is inexcusable…..it is a "silly" mistake which reveals his ignorance of the most basic historical facts. And such sheer ignorance weakens the very establishment of his principal qualification for being President [i.e.,his "high" intelligence]. And since everyone ,even Michelle, his wife ,admits his lack of experience, the only incentive left to support his application to the presidential position is primarily due to his "high" intelligence. But as I said earlier, his "high" intelligence is a mirage and his "intelligence" is average ,or slightly above average.

Maybe he might have been a sharper man 17 years ago as a Harvard Grad. However I doubt, with all seriousness that he is as smart./or bright as he was back then.

Uhhh...first off, when he referred to the liberation of Auschwitz, I'm pretty sure he meant Buchenwald which was in fact liberated by the 89th Infantry division in which his great uncle served during......yeah, okay dude, you're right. Who am I kidding? You got me. Obama is a totally incompetent affirmative action case who barely functions on a high school level, plagiarized his way through two of the best Universities in the world, lied about being recruited by high profile law firms like Sidley & Austin (which is where he and his wife claim to have met each other while he was allegedly an intern) and instead was forced to live on the meager wages that he earned as a community organizer because he couldn't cut it in the real world, stumbled into Illinois state politics on the backs of bunch of gullible, ignorant blacks from his old constituency in the south side of Chicago, acquired a position as a lecturer at the prestigious University of Chicago law school again through affirmative action, and managed to stumble and mumble his way to a United States Senate seat and even the Democratic nomination for the Presidency through the blind support of a mass of ignorant blacks and white bleeding heart liberals who pretend to support him because they are tortured by their guilty consciences. I was in denial until a few moments ago, but the incidents that I tried to excuse as simple slips of the tongue and minor mistakes that can happen to any person, especially one who has a camera in their face almost every waking moment of the day, have been proven through your perspicacious analysis to be signs of the undeniable truth that Obama is a man who barely possesses the mentally capacity to be a street sweeper much less a high ranking elected official or the purported "leader of the free world."

I admit it. I and millions of other people in the US and abroad have been bamboozled by pure unadulterated hype. If only we had talking heads on television doing political analysis in this country who possess the kind of sapient and sagacious wit that Black Master Jay does, then this whole farce would have been averted shortly after Obama started his campaign.

OK, Obama's intelligence is a "mirage"; by contrast, however, you're an unmistakable dumbfuck. Before you highlight the inconsequential flubs of a political candidate, you should question your own inability to complete a sentence without at least one grammatical error.

Don't you ever grow tired from being a dumbfuck, or do you just consume a lot of energy drinks?

How does a dumbfuck put on his pants, inside out?

You have NO mind....cant you see this??..lol...smart my fucking ass

Of course Obama's bullshitting...part of having a fancy law degree is learning the Art of Bullshitology...but he's no worse than any other president we've had. Why must the standard be raised now...why didn't we care more four years ago or eight years ago....or even twenty years ago? Many of the problems we've had have existed for quite some time...but only now (with a black candidate in the race) do we care to examine every noun, verb and adjective that comes out of a candiate's mouth.

Any time affirmative action enters the conversation...I think the discourse can have meaning...but it's importance is lessened when we are discussing the so-called elite schools. Pookie Jenkins from Southwest Oklahoma Technical Barber College for the Insane isn't going to get into Harvard Law with a 2.2 GPA and a 125 LSAT score over a well qualified white student. It is more likely that the black and white student have comparable qualifications and the race/gender of the applicants is what tips the balance.

(I think we should focus on helping poor students regardless of race...minorities will still benefit disproportionately but working class whites will finally be able to join blacks in forming a coalition that the wealthy has attempted to keep from coming together for the past 200+ years)

Bush is most definitely not "sharper" than Obama. I actually think he may be a better politician or at least better at "connecting" with people...and in truth...legislative success can often depend on just that...Obama's problem like McCain is that they want to appeal to everyone. Bush understood his audience (mostly Evangelicals) and he went after them....he didn't have the luxury of appealing to a broad swath of Independents like McCain and Obama so he had to keep it simple.

When you are trying to win both Midwest evangelicals and moderate Mexicans as well as suburbanite white women and southern black men....you will always end up becoming a snake oil salesman. No president...Bush, Clinton, Bush and neither McCain or Obama does what they promise...they will make plenty of concessions and compromises and their eventual policy will be at best...a shadow of their lofty rhetoric.

BMJ, its very easy to explain what Obama said in those speeches...
    THEY ARE CALLED MISTAKES!

Even as a relatively "young" politician, this man has probably given more speeches and answered more town-hall type questions than he can count. Now, if you want to if you want to dismiss him as a GED carrying idiot because he made a few mistakes in non-prepared speeches, go right ahead...but you will find yourself among very select company.

And maybe you were confused for being a republican because you spewed the same conservative crap about Obama's experience that republicans do. Being a "good" politician has less to do with experience and more to do with sound judgment and having an ability to "see" into the future. (30 years ago, Jimmy Carter talked about the US becoming energy independent when a barrel of oil was less than $60/barrel. It cost him a second term as president and made him a laughing stock. Who's laughing now?)

You can count on one hand the number of politicians who had to balls to speak out against the Iraq Invasion, and Obama was one of them. Also, he (along with the excellent staff he put together) was able to defeat heavily favored h. clinton by seeing the future of campaign financing, forever changing how politicians raise money.

And as far as experience, what we americans havent realized (or maybe choose to ignore) is that we dont want presidents with too much national experience. Of the last 5 presidents, only one had any national experience. Conservatives have been pulling their hair out about experience when their poster boy for conservative values, ronald reagan, only had 2 terms as a state governor under his belt before he was elected president.

And as far as mccain, I dislike him less as a politician (Im not at all surprised by his war monger mentality and favoritism for the wealthy at the expense of the working class...that what republicans do) and more as a person. Any man who has such disdain for minorities (track record of voting against MLK holiday and A. Action) and women (stance against abortion rights and called his wife a "f*cking c*nt!" in public) clearing is someone who cant see past whats best for power-controlling white males.
