Wow, I didn't even realize that today was Israel's "birthday".

Have you ever been to Israel? I was there back in 2000. Beautiful country.

    bookworm,

i've always wanted to go to Israel, mainly b/c of spiritual reasons. i'm a strong christian, so i'd love to walk the same ground that Jesus walked - it would be the most humbling experience. but with the way everything has gone over there, politically, in the past few years...i'm scared to go. but who knows....maybe some day!

Oh, I would suggest Israel (in peaceful times only, of course) to anyone. I went there on an archaeological dig with the Associates for Biblical Research. It was fantastic. We dug on the West Bank (we were looking for the city of Ai), and we stayed near Jerusalem.

It was an amazing experience. I would love to go back someday and I plan on going back someday.

And it was very humbling. I was raised Catholic, but I was never/still not very religious. And it really opened my eyes to alot of things. And I learned alot. :D

To this day, I count those 2 1/2 weeks as some of the best experiences of my life. :D

    bookworm,

yeah, i think today the only time to visit anywhere in the middle east would be during peaceful times....no doubt! maybe one day i'll get to go. there are so many things i'd love to see in that area of the world though.

do you have pics from when you were there? you should post them on your myspace page so i can see them...heheh  i think it's so cool that you are an archeaologist...did i butcher the spelling? lol!! that just seems like such an amazing line of work. go you!! :D

I have pictures upon pictures of when I was there. I think I took like 14 rolls of film (yes, I said rolls of film, not digital :p ) while we were there. Most from when we were touring, but some from the site.

And no, you didn't butcher the spelling. LOL. (So many people do though. And don't get me started on the whole Neandertal spelling and pronounciation! )

Anyway, I digress. I will make it a project to get them into my computer and up on my myspace. When I do, I'll send you a message, so you can see the pictures. I always wanted to do a scrapbook - but I can never seem to find the time. I guess I don't really want to do it then, huh?

It's a beautiful part of the world. It really hits home, when I hear about the bad things happening there. :(

We also wanted to go to Petra while we were there. But, even though Jordan is a US friendly country, we were advised not to go, so we didn't. :( I hate that I missed that opportunity. And for those who don't know what Petra is, check out the ending of the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade movie. :D

Speaking of Indy...I can't WAIT for the new movie to come out!! YAY!!! :D

(wanted to end on a happy note.)

I really would love to go to the Mount of Olives. There's something about the place that strikes me.

Sar El works to promote cultural and educational exchange between the diaspora and Israel; to promotion of Jewish continuity; partnerships with NON jews who love and support Israel and her protection.

we work in nursing homes,IDF warehouses, guiding tours, lectures on jewish and Israeli issues, and shabbat hospitality.

contribute to Israeli economy, foster new friendships,
promotes Aliyah, good will to Israel

I'd be more in favor of a "Jewish homeland" if it didn't involve the wholesale slaughter of so many Palestinians. Nazi Germany created the conditions for the eventual creation of Isreal, so it should've been carved out of a portion of Europe.

It makes no sense to build a Jewish homeland in the middle of so much hostility. Makes even less sense for the West to commit as much as we do to protect Isreal.

I blame the Arab States for not setting up a government in exile for the Palestinians instead of starting wars against Israel especially after 48.

amen, but there was no help, even from Jordan.

Soulthinker – your name is a misnomer - this comment about blaming arabs for starting wars? If the US were occupied tomorrow; homes bull dozed, its culture and rights eviscerated and people systematically persecuted and displaced, then forced into neighbouring countries - would you blame Canada and Mexico for not setting up a state for you?

Well,Mwahh they did start it. Those Arab nations did not help the Palestinians in setting up a government there. Had they did and Israelis invaded their part of their land then there is justification. Instead, they started it and set a course that cost thousands of lives.
