I said he'd cave on nearly everything during the 2008 primary season. Saddened that I was right, but not surprised. Frankly I thought he ran about 8 years too soon. He wanted to be president, but I was never sure he'd really figured out what he wanted to *do* as president. I think he had bad timing, and wasn't the right guy for 2008 - he inherited a mess economically, 2 wars and a really resurgent right. He'd have been a great president at a different time, but he's been a massive disappointment to a lot of progressives, who feel he's thrown progressives under the bus. I was pleased to see him take a stand about DOMA, but he should have been playing hardball a long time ago on both social issues and the economy.
Republicans said they won't pass a debt ceiling increase without substantial budget cuts. Democrats cave and put forth 2 trillion dollars in cuts. Not enough, Republicans say, we want MOAR. So Democrats put forth a plan that saves 4 trillion dollars over the next ten years by cutting Medicaid and Medicare. Not an option, Republicans say; because that plan includes tax increases on the über-wealthy and closing of tax loopholes. It's politics on both sides but the Republicans in Congress are being obscenely childish by absolutely refusing to give even one inch of ground when it was their miserable excuse for a President that was responsible for running our debt so astronomically high in the first place. Don't you just love politics?
The important reason of why I have made this thread is because my grandmother is disabled and lives on a fixed income. Her checks come from the Federal Government. Unfortunately, if we default, she would have no money to live off of, unless my aunt could pay her rent (and I'm not sure about that). It may be best if our country changes over from being a representative democracy to a direct democracy so we can actually make substantial progress in the country and things that benefit the American people could get done.
Well, the Asian and European Stock Markets are beginning to have problems because of the inactivity on a plan for our debt. It may be best for Obama to invoke the 14th Amendement at this point, so he could get around the resistance of the GOP and those in the House of Reps with connections to the Tea Party. The Republicans will threaten to impeach Obama, but I think Obama should take the risk at this point.
Debt ceiling raises do not increase actually debt , because the economy grows. The problem is taxes are too low and Obama is right in trying to rectify that.
Sometimes you have to ask who exactly do the Republicans serve(rhetorical of course) and why can't the American people see it. Neither side seems to act in the best interest of the people. The only thing that will save us is revolution. I see no other way.
Believe it or not, I agree with you. Both parties are in thrall to our corporate overlords, and effectively prevent any third party from gaining power. I've been so angry about this whole mess I considered that what we need is a march on Washington, especially by elderly, disabled and the other people who will be deeply affected by the cuts. Maybe a few of us should consider setting ourselves on fire on the Capitol steps.
I posted this on another thread. This tentative deal we saw tonight on TV is nothing more than a continuation of an on-going ponzi scheme. It's called quantitative easing (QE). It's a debt-derivative phase where the banks are given bailout money while the stimulus money is being used to jump-start volatility in the stock market. It encourages more investing for a chance at profits that would not come otherwise in a depression like this one. That's the good news. The bad news ( and truth) is that through stimulus, the American taxpayer is raped of his/her monies as it is funneled to off-shore foreign banks. It's also funneled into the Big Six Banks when their bailout monies expire and they need more money to stay afloat. As this destructive phase continues to destroy countries like America, the dollar is undervalued and marginalized greatly to the point of extinction. To the people who think the raising of the debt ceiling was a good thing, I got news for you. It's all a part of a diabolical scheme by the off-shore bank cartels to bring America into servitude. Your government is already bought off by these power elite, rich families. And to them, you are nothing but collateral. It's time we all awaken to the truth and fight these people. www.infowars.com www.greenewave.com www.wideawakenews.com
The problem is everyone intellectually knows they are being fucked but NO ONE wants to sacrifice to stop it. We'll all be facebooking and twittering until we're dead.
At this point, I believe a march on Washington is the best thing we should get ready for. If the Senate approves this bill (it's hard to tell if they would or wouldn't), it would be a political victory for those who want smaller government and people who are affiliated with the Tea Party. Obama will lose support from Democrats and Progressives a few days from now and that will hinder his prospects for re-election next year. If they reject the bill, a second option is to invoke the 14th Amendment. The third option is for the country to default. If we take the third option, everyone takes the blame, equally. Democrats, Republicans, Independents, the Tea Party, and the American people.
