Is Same Sex Marriage and Interracial Marriage the Same?

    Same-Sex = Interracial

Yes. There are many factors to consider:

    1. Loving v. Virginia basically prohibited blacks and whites from marrying becaue they see it as very "unnatural". Back then, blacks were deemed less than human and of a sub-species, therefore, "breeding" with blacks was like bestiality. The same arguments regarding interracial marriages are being applied in same-sex marriage debates. People deem it as "unnatural" and horrendous. My home state, Louisiana, didn't end the Sodomy Laws until 2003.

    2. Marriage should be an all or nothing ordeal. You cannot exclude a group to have the right to marry because of your personal hatred towards them. That's akin to that Justice of the Peace who refuse to marry an interracial couple. If the government can acknowledge one marriage, why not all marriages as long as they are consenual?

    3. Our attitudes have evolved since then and so did our knowledge on human sexuality. Homosexuality have no adverse effect on our society. If anything, the more we know about human sexual behavior and not treat it like a foreign virus, we would be much more appreciative towards gays.

    4. The Constitution (The Preamble) basically allows people to have the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. In the case of same-sex marriage, it's within their right to seek out their life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness because they are Americans first and foremost and their personal identity should be a detriment or threat to the meaning of freedom.

I don't really see marriage as a human right. I don't even see it as something very necessary. There are some legal aspects that are different for married couples than unmarried ones, but these should be possible to regulate in other ways.

I think that all people should be able to get married if the want to, and I don't care about their ethnicity, sexual preferences or anything like that. Hell, I'm even pro polygamy and think that people should be able to marry more than one person. However, it should be up to every church to choose themselves if they want to marry any two (or three, or four) people. No priest or whatever should be made to do something that goes against their beliefs, that would go against freedom of religion. But everybody should have the possibility to get married by the state.

Mmm ... breeding with blacks ...

You're absolutely correct. However, I would argue with you that if the government already acknowledges a certain form of marriage, then they should consider all marriages. It's an everything or nothing ordeal. You cannot discriminate, especially when you're a country that believes that everyone is equal. Want to solve it? Eliminate the benefits for married couples and just allow civil unions and grant them full benefits and leave marriage out of it.

And like you, I'm very much a "super-liberal" when it comes to marriage. Polygamy and Incest, I'll be in favor of all that as long as the parties are consenting adults.

Ah...and cultivating with blacks is something you'd fancy, no? Hmmm, Ununhexium...here's a little image for you. Something to think on in the future.

When it comes to black men and white women gay marriage is way more acceptable. I've seen way more men on men and woman on woman action if tv and film than ir on screen romances.

In this over Christianized country people still act like its less of sin when same sex couples mate than when its a bm and a ww.

Actually Loving Vs. Virginia actually ruled that denying a couple the right to marry because of race unconstituitional. There are festivals dedicated to the Lovings each year. I went this summer.

My only problem with Gay people marrying is the fact they want their unions to be called marriage when the current law recongnizes it as a union between a man and a woman. Not to mention many want to do it in a church where that's imposing their views on people who see it differently. I never understood what was wrong with civil unions.

Andrae, my point about the similarities is that it's still denying the right for people to marry because of something absolutely ridiculous. In other words, be it a social construct like race or sexual orientation, the reasons to deny someone the right to marry is all based on bigotry. And second of all, The Federal Marriage Amendment did not pass when it was introduced around 2005-2006 so the Federal government doesn't have a distinct definition of marriage. If that was the case, then the states that legalized same-sex marriages would be considered illegal. That's why it's still part of the state's rights.

And no one said that civil unions are bad. They're good. The problem is that civil unions don't have the same kind of recognition or receive the maximum benefits from the government (federal) which is why civil unions aren't that favorable. Plus, if you look at it from a state-to-state basis, some states outlawed same-sex marriages, unions, and domestic partnerships.

Fair enough. Point made. My only problem with your statement is that sexual orientation isn't a social construct. How we treat people of a different sexual orientation is. Sexual orientation is very biological.

I should have clarified that further. Well, you're somewhat correct in that respect. Sexual orientation is more biological than environmental, I'll give you that. However, sexuality and how we define the norms on sexual behavior is a social construct. Our ideas on sexuality have changed over the years and that's why I made that statement.

Anyone who does not meet with a predominant norm in their society is a minority. In America, a Muslim is a religious minority; a gay man is a sexual minority as are heterosexual people who have sexual/romantic relationships with people from other ethnic groups.

At this juncture in history, most societies do not produce couples that unite from separate ethnic backgrounds. Most people are typically attracted to others from the same background or they simply wish to avoid making waves with their families and friends.

As a heterosexual minority your social status may be less offensive to the surrounding community due to the heteronormative standards of most societies. One cannot, however, build a logically consistent argument against same sex marital unions on one hand and advocate for so-called "interracial" marital unions on the other.
