    King registered as a Democrat no doubt when he got out of jail and felt vindicated when the Democrats helped pass the Civil Rights Act of 1965. Also during the 1964 election Barry Goldwater voted against the Civil Rights Act which got him high votes among White southern Democrats whom later defected to the Republican Party.
