Besides my first language (which is German) I only speak English and a little French (the little bit I remember from school). I wish I could also speak Spanish or Italian (or both!). I wonder how long it would take to pick up the language if you live in another country? I was impressed by the movie "Eat pray love" where she supposedly learned Italian fluently within 4 month.

I can confidently say hau'oli makahiki hou! (Happy new year in Hawaiian) Someday I will get me arse to Germany before I die. I've always wanted to go and trace family records and go to where we lived before they migrated to the states (which weren't states..yes, I know!) in the 1600s.
Languages are one of my biggest loves, German and French are the two I am most familiar with, also took Italian in college. Love the combination words in German such as Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten - overnight accommodation possibilities. One way I learn to master my pronunciation is to watch programming on sites like RTL, ZDF, TF1, TV5, etc.
Spanish is my second language, I also like French and Italian, IMO French has a melody that makes it quite remarkable to say the least. I could never get tired of hearing it.
LOL, don't we have nice complicated words? Where did you get the ö from? You got a European keyboard? I'm jealous. I never had the chance to take Italian lessons :smt085 I had French for 8 years. Still can speak and read a little but I'm totally out of practice since I never really liked it.
LOL, the umlauts, they are found in the special character feature for letters in the Finder bar on my Mac. Heck you can even make the words one letter longer by using ae, oe, ue sans umlaut. Its like someone said lets just make these long combination words, to hell with breaking them into multiple words. Was ist die Höchstgeschwindigkeitsbegrenzung auf den Autobahn (to heck with maximum speed limit as three words when we can make it one) French and Italian was very easy to pick up for me. Some people are good with numbers, some with art and architecture, my thing is language and history. LOL, if I had the time I would learn as many languages as possible. After listening to Björk and Sigur Rós I fell in love with Iceland and its landscape and wanted to learn Icelandic.
