My Lady's Politics Attracted Me to Other Ways of Thinking

I consider myself to be a moderate politically, though i lean to the left a tad bit. My lady is moderate but she leans a little to the right. Her family is conservative which is part of the problem between me and them. My family is liberal with some progressives thrown in for good measure. My lady though she comes from a conservative strict upbringing is open minded. What i love about her is her ability to see both sides of an issue. That is something i try to do. She is my teacher. She has open up to me a whole new world of thoughts and issues that i have never paid to much attention to in the past. At first it was hard for me to adjust to her way of thinking. But by seeing an issue from both sides i have been able to set aside some of my own prejudices to not prejudge others of different perspectives. Any one else here have a partner who is on the other side of the political coin so to speak? Is your partner conservative, liberal, or a moderate? How did you set aside your political differences to mate with each other? I did not fully know about my lady's political orientation until some time into our relationship. She said she never like to talk politics. She was afraid that i would have been turned off from her. I guess love over takes one's political leanings.

 

It's always good to see both sides of an issue to get educated on it. Your a lucky man.

Honestly,

Both parties have their problems. I think that both parties have some good points. Possibly less government control over people is good. [Republicans] Still have some social programs (possible health care system) [Democrats] Although I don't necessarily like either national party because both don't try to help solve really serious issues. Normally when election comes [presidency] or for local offices they always have some agenda going on and for example last election for presidency was for gay marriage. Why do I care about marriage between two of the same-sex when there are more serious problems such as an invasion of a country in the middle east where most Americans don't even know where the country is much rather the different cultures within that country? So, I have to say it is good to get both sides of the picture but still remember that problems are always going to be with political parties and both the GOP and Democrats focus on issues that are either small or don't reflect issues that need to be solved. For example, education,employment,housing,trading (as in importing which America has a huge deficit with China,Japan etc..) Exporting less. So, BlackTiger, I am happy that you are able to understand both the left and the right but I hope that politically America can address more serious issues at election time.

Wall Street...not Washington...runs America....it has for a LONG time..

At the end of the day..the democrats and republicans hop in the same limos and golf-carts...and in the SAME BEDS..

It's amazing that so many millions of people in modern times are tricked by ancient tactics used in Sparta and beyond..

Simple tricks that wouldn't fool a monkey..are working big-time in the 21rst century..

While Im not a Democrat, I cant stand the Republican Party. Their efforts to add difficulty to the voting process is sickening. Almost every Republican I know rants about "people" (read: immigrants and minorities) living off of the government and "people" abusing social programs (welfare and food stamps.) And my response is, "Who gives a s*#t about that when the biggest abuse is in the form of corporate welfare (major tax breaks and money and land grants!) They complain about "people" snatching crumbs from the table and turn a blind eye to to greedy corps. taking the whole cookie jar.

Before we worry about people "stealing" millions, lets stop the corp. out there from stealing billions!

My girl and I have pretty much the same political views (moderates), but where she has opened my eyes is on women's issues: abortion, maternity leave/benefits, and sexual harrassment, especially in the workplace. Its amazing the crap women still have to put up with!

And on a side note: I think male politicans should have very little voice when it comes to abortion issues.

Yes, the Republican Party does make it harder for poor southerners to vote by forcing them to produce forms of identification before voting. The goal is to weaken the impact of the poor vote on election results (they want to, both, disqualify and intimidate voters that have fewer resources...many poor folks, for example, do not have drivers licenses or may be at a different address than what is listed on file).

It's something that Martin King tried to eradicate in the 60s. Unfortunately, this kind of threat to our civil liberties continues.

Stevens was seeking over 450 million dollars to build two useless bridges in Alaska. Despite his enormous power in Washington, his fellow politicians said no to this corporate welfare scheme.

So, yes, you are right. We stigmatize welfare moms that are in dire need. But, we legitimize corporate welfare pirates seeking millions (Stevens attempt at stealing hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars ALMOST WORKED!).

You are right about wall street controlling America and having a huge pull over the economy. I don't think many people know that drugs run a good part of the economy and lets say for example the drug trade ended the economy would collapse. Also your other points were true. I was just saying a few points of what I felt how both of the national parties neither are that good.

Back to the topic,

I think if your significant other does give you a new idea to think about politically then it is good that you have a better idea e.g. abortion how women still have to deal with serious decisions that men don't usually have to think about.

 

Who do you think owns the corporates? A street named Wall? Drugs? No. The people own the corporates. hmmm and lets be honest; if you 'all of a sudden' care about your partners political persuasions - well - the sex must be good...

 

Republicans ignore blacks because they don't believe we'd ever vote for them...and many of their constituents wouldn't stay Republican if the GOP ever went too far in trying to court blacks. Democrats ignore blacks because they know we WILL vote for them. All they have to do is hug us and squeeze us on the ass every now and then...and its a done deal...we'll vote on the straight Democratic ticket.


We give our vote away too freely and that's why no one feels the need to appeal to us. It's like someone trying to threaten you with broomstick when they have a .44 Magnum Mark XIX Desert Eagle

 

The GOP has a bad record as far as Blacks are concerned. They have the White Southerners who defected from the Democratic Party and Social Conservatives who are don't give a rat's butt about Black rights like Affirmative Action-but they want that for the WW. From 1877 to 1964 they give crumbs to Blacks and not encouraging them fully to run for office. The Democrats has it in the bag on Black votes but they don't want to give bigger power to them in return of those votes. The House Slaves like Sowell,Thomas,Steele,Williams,Jones and others love the GOP. They are more 'bound' to their masters than the Democratic ones.

 

I consider myself a purged conservative - i tend to lean towards center-of-left - and my fiancee is very liberal. I believe that different opinions can sometimes be the thing that brings a couple together.

About the political parties, none of the candidates really run the country. Those who really run the country consist of his closest aides, Washington lobbyists and Wall Street. Fuck all that bullshit, these are the people that have the real influence in America. I personally believe that the two major parties don't really give a fuck about poor people of any color (however, moreso blacks). They only are in Washington for their pockets. To be honest, there are very few committed politicians in Washington. Despite their postering, pandering and hollering, they could give two shits about what their "constituents" think. I really despise the man and most of what he stands for, but Ron Paul is one of a very small number of truly committed politicians in Washington.

I kinda hate it when people say the whole "Democrats don't care for blacks" thing. Not that i disagree as such, but the thing is i don't vote for the whole party, i vote for candidates. For example, in the last gubernatorial election, i voted for Charlie Crist but i never voted for his predecessor Jeb Bush or the Republican Senate candidates. Likewise, i voted for Al Gore in 2000 but not for Kerry in 2004. It's that simple. If most blacks treated the Dems like that and hold them accountable, they'd treat their voters much better.

Don't even get me started on the Republicans. Many of them don't care about blacks but i'll concede, most pander to their lily-white racist base. They know that if they reach out to people of color, those people will stay home. But the good news is that the electorate is getting more and more diverse and that race-baiting won't last for much long.

However i dont think a relationship would function if both parties think differently politically.You gotta remember that a womans political views tells a lot about her as whole, in terms of her beliefs, idiologies,ethics, morals, etc. And if you and her are loud mouthed and opinionated about your personal politiical views, it simply WILL NOT work. LOL....seriously, i had a girl that was so opinionated and hated losing political debates, and lets just say, i hardly ever got laid because i always handed her ass back to her in debates...

 

Healthy debate is a good part of a relationship, but the two of you have to be prepared to take it. I don't mind if a person has different political opinions to me, with two caveats: that they have actually thought about their views and are informed in some way at all (!), and that they are open minded. I've got pretty used to people not agreeing with my politics - they seem sensible to me but radical to everyone else!
