NOTHING!! Europe forgets if it was not for America, they would all be speaking German. Somebody needs to tell Obamba the election is over. Every time he speaks, its like he is campaigning again. Goes over there, tells them we are arrogant, we are not a christian nation( majority here is christian), how terrible we are , etc etc. Pretty sick how will tell anybody anything just for, "they like me". His tour was a gutless ass kissing trip. This president is so embarassed of his own country along with his wife(who just recently became proud of her country for the first time in her life) This guy is going to be the biggest tool in history!!

Yes Amanda, there is no need for this. Though far from perfect, the US is the most prosperous, powerful and generous nation in the history of civilization.

And before you all start harping on about some bullsh*t...no, I'm not saying Obama should apologise for being American, or for America (unless there is some identifiable issue that requires it)...Just that this kind of ridiculous attitude is unnecessary and offensive.

 

Now that you got the name-calling out of your system, can you dispute her statement that you quoted above? Nope.

 

Because I am entirely tired of this attitude that America saved the world. I am not disputing the fact that the USA played a major role in the end of WWII...this is a historical fact...but the inference here (and which is so often made) is that America single-handedly reversed the war. It's a joint effort. Acknowledging that once in a while wouldn't hurt. And it's respectful to the hundreds of thousands of people who lost their lives fighting for their countries or what they believed was right.

 

Totally understand that, but remember the context was a discussion about whether the US should apologize for basically being a superpower. Also, she was correct whether you are comfortable with it or not...if the US did not enter WWII, the Allies would have lost.

 

Maybe, maybe not. It's probable, yes - but not a certainty.

Should America apologise for being a superpower? No - America is where it is because of good management and maximising fortuitous world circumstances. The attitude that goes with it is a cultural thing. The world is full of all sorts of people and acknowledging that is necessary to world harmony.

Everything happens in cycles. As did Rome and Egypt lose their power, so too will America one day...so on, and so forth. The world keeps turning.

From my POV - American culture, including open pride and congratulatory self confidence (all lovely in their own way, and within their own cultural context), is the antithesis of "good culture" in many other countries. It is this, the appearance of a lack of humility, which I think has more of an impact than anything else. But that's just my purely subjective observation.

 

Ummm... I'm not talking about the G20...

I'm talking about the things we have done in our foreign policy to piss others off.

We aided Afghanistan in their war with the Soviets with weapons and training in order to rid ourselves of a rival and then as soon as the soviets were beaten down, we promptly withdrew all aid. WE are responsible for creating the likes of Bin Laden because we used them to do our dirty work and then threw them away as so much garbage.

Too many of our "leaders" and large corporations are only out to further American interest, read - their own and not the American people. Now that more countries are aquiring nuclear weapons technology, we can no longer just bully others to get what we want. Sorry - what THEY want.

Yes, we should be worried about some of those countries gaining this tech. but we are one of the reasons why they DO!
