Questions on immigration and hate groups for my research project...

I got an 8-10 page essay to do, and it's on the historical connection between hate groups and anti-immigration movements. I'm supposed to interview a few people, and I've already got a couple, but I thought it would be better to ask on a forum, so that way, I could get a wider range of opinions on the subject, than just the 2 people I've interviewd. Plus, I my assignment sheet says I need to interview people with seniority, and everybody on this site is a lot older than I am so it works out. I've got about 5 questions. I have a sixth one, but don't think it's that good of a question. I'd appreciate the help.

1.What do you think was the cause, or part of the cause, of the increase in hate groups after the year 2000?

2. Do you think there is more hostility toward Mexican immigrants and other Hispanic immigrants compared to other immigrants. If so, why?

3. How big a of a part do you think the internet plays in spreading of hate groups and anti-immigration attitudes?

4. Do you think hate groups have an influence on the general American public's attitude towards immigrants, even the average person may claim not to have any hatred or Danit-immigration feelings?

5.From your experiences, which immigrant group have you noticed the most hostility towards, in you community, as well as the whole country?

Mexicans are resposible for far more hate than they recieve... especially towards Blacks.

The rhetoric post 9-11 about patriotism and being "American" at first, and now the economy.

No, Immigrants from Islamic areas and East Indians who are confused for Muslims do.

3. How big a of a part do you think the internet plays in spreading of hate groups and anti-immigration attitudes?

I think the internet has played a substancial mode in banding together like minded individuals.

4. Do you think hate groups have an influence on the general American public's attitude towards immigrants, even the average person may claim not to have any hatred or Danit-immigration feelings?

Yes, it makes it easier to voice anti-social opinions if you hear someone else doing it first. As I said in another thread, we are still basicly pack animals and fitting in is vital to our happiness.

But I actually feel fox notnews has play a bigger part in spreading hateful rhetoric.

5.From your experiences, which immigrant group have you noticed the most hostility towards, in you community, as well as the whole country?

Muslims, maybe because I am intimately involved with their communities but I doubt it. It is still very dangerous to be Muslim in the US.


Side note: You might want to read some history books about the anti-Immigrant/Mexican movement during the time leading up to and during the Great Depression. When times are good, no one is screaming about the illegal immigrants but let jobs get scarce and they are the first target of our fears/anxieties.

I feel that non-white and non-Christian immigrants face more hostility than white Christian immigrants like me. Overall, there are so many immigrants in the tri-state area, and more arriving daily, that people got used to us.

Can I say the author is wrong? No. She's hostile, but she makes many valid points. At the immigration law firm where I work, we have several female clients who got asylum because they suffered FGM in their home countries.

Technically there are ways of ensuring that people only of "good moral character" get their permanent residence, but there are so many ways around it. For example, a question on both the permanent residence application and the naturalization application, asks "Have you ever practiced or do you plan to practice polygamy?" Show me somebody who said yes. Yet, there are many undercover immigrant polygamists in this country. Fly, I'm not attacking Muslims. Just stating facts.

 

The fabric of this country changes constantly. At one point in the past, Catholics were considered outcasts. I did a paper last year on St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York (a most magnificent cathedral, the mass I attended there was unforgettable), and I researched the history of New York's Irish immigrants. They were absolute outcasts in the XIX-th century. However as their numbers increased, they became - had to become - accepted, and finally America elected its first Catholic president, President Kennedy. And whom did America elect this year? Its first black president.

This country is the most diverse country of the world. Everyone gets a place here. Due to the overcrowding of the country as well as the world, not everyone is happy about it. But, immigration is what America has always been and is about.

Yeah, the Irish did have it pretty bad. It kinda surprised me that after how bad the Irish were treated, only like 5 percent of them returned home during the immigration increase at the time, according to my history book. But happy times weren't exactly crackin' off back home either, with their famine n' stuff. Same for the Jews. Only like 11 percent of them returned home.

 

I think it was Israel. Or at least at a time when Israel wasn't recognized as a nation by the other bigger nations.

 

No... I think it was probably Europe. That's where most Jews were arriving here from. Europe was physically dangerous for them. Eastern Europe was and still is anti-Semitic as all hell. I have had plenty of disgusting contact with Eastern European anti-Semitism. I'm 25% Jewish but there's nothing Semitic in my appearance, so sometimes I have to hear stuff. Sometimes I speak up... sometimes I don't... the same as when I hear racist comments.

 

Damn. It's sad that places are still like that today. I'm the same. Sometimes I'll speak up. Other times I won't. Cause I know if I get into it with somebody, they will get heated and want to get hostile. That's when I just tell them to cool out, and forget the whole thing. There aren't many Jews in my area. I notice more anti-Eastern European in my city than any other group though.

We have a large Eastern European population in my city. It seemed to happen out of nowhere, when I changed schools in 8th grade, because I never really paid attention to the people in my area, since all my friends and my school was across town, and I never was concerned about a person ethnic background. I just saw white as white. But when I changed schools, my new friends would always say "stay away from the Russians" and other shit like that. I always wondered why, and they were always like "cause they talk hella shit". That was the answer I ALWAYS got. And I'm thinking to myself, "you're talking mad shit right now too". And even if they weren't from Russia, they would still be called Russians. I've heard many Ukranian and other Eastern European kids get pissed, for good reason, and tell people that they aren't from Russia, and everybody's just like "yeah, whatever. Same thing." It hella surprised me, because at my old school, which was hella diverse, I never heard this kind of stuff. I don't think me and my friends told many, if any, racial jokes or brought up race at my old school. I'd joke around in 7th grade and say my white friend was my black brotha or something, but never anything real offensive. I don't know if it's because I went to a private Christin school before that I didn't hear a lot of racist stuff, and then went to a public school, but I never understood why the kids were saying messed up stuff like that. And it's a common stereotype in my part of town for idiots to associate young Russian kids with the Russian mafia, BMWs and other nice cars, and chop shops. Even though some of my friends have stolen hella stuff too.

 

Yeah, Eastern Europeans get pissed off when they get called Russians.

About mafia - that's too funny. Once I saw a Craigslist ad in which a man said he's really attracted to Russian women and he'd like to meet one, but she can't have any association with the Brooklyn Russian mafia.

The right wing propaganda machine, they are on public airwaves and on foxnews giving hate speeches. The terror incident of 911 caused more people to become less tolerant toward those who look middle eastern.

Yes, there is more hate toward Mexicans and other Latino immigrants mainly because of their huge numbers they became more visible and their numbers freaked white people out. The largest minorities were African Americans as the result of huge Latino arrivals the AA are now outnumbered. There is already animosity between the two groups and the statement made by flamingtero is true, I've seen on YouTube a BM shot to death by 2 Mexican criminals for no reason fortunately the two gang bangers were arrested by Boston police and they were brought to justice.

3. How big a of a part do you think the Internet plays in spreading of hate groups and anti-immigration attitudes?

As you know the Internet is a form of media just like Foxnews it's even better because it's interactive. White men are spewing hate using the Internet they are saying America is becoming way too brown, If these new arrivals were Russian or Ukrainian the haters would not be saying a word..


4. Do you think hate groups have an influence on the general American public's attitude towards immigrants, even the average person may claim not to have any hatred or Danit-immigration feelings?

They don't have that much influence but bear in mind they have friends and xenophobic sympathizers in powerful positions.

5.From your experiences, which immigrant group have you noticed the most hostility towards, in you community, as well as the whole country?

Immigrants who are neither white nor Christian.
