I will admit, I didn't watch the video either.

There are some very real and important connections between Libya and Sudan. Sudan has two major dimensions of internal conflict. One is the on-again/off-again civil war between North and South, with the muslim "Arab" north targeting the African Christian/animist South. This has potentially been resolved with the secession of the south of perhaps, in the Yugoslavia model, it's just been converted from civil war to an international war.

The other conflict in Sudan is of course the genocide in Darfur. This is a somewhat odd situation in that there are not huge differences between the group committing the genocide and the group being victimized. It's the similarity between them that led the UN's Commission of Inquiry to find (controversially) that there was no genocide happening, only war crimes/crimes against humanity. The differences between the groups have really been socially constructed, so we have distinct "Arab" and "African" groups with little by way of outward differences to distinguish them. The two groups have the same physical appearance, speak the same language, etc., which is what gave rise to the confused and foolish Commission of Inquiry decision. Importantly, both groups are mostly Muslim but the Government of Sudan (GoS) forces (the "Arab" side) are targetting the rebel groups and civilians in Darfur because of a very particular and insidious form of Arab supremacism that has come into Sudan by way of Libya. Libya's been a huge supporter of the GoS and its actions in Darfur.

 

The Isrealis and Palestinians have the same physical appearance too...yet that doesn't stop people from caring about abuse there.

 

I wasn't implying that the similarity in outward appearance has any real consequence other than having confused the Commission of Inquiry peeps. As far as the two groups are concerned, they are distinct and separate groups and that is the relevant point with respect to whether or not genocide is taking place.

I think that the genocide in Darfur has received considerable attention. A number of celebrities have taken up the cause in an effort to bring attention to the crisis and in Bush Jr's administration, both Bush and Powell were insistent that what is happening there is genocide.
