It's kind of like calling water wet but I thought it was interesting seeing how the article was written by the Irish Times.

Der Spiegal has also been pretty good on recognizing the nonsensical behavior of the modern GOP as well and has put out some good articles.

Good article. This quote rings true IMO for a few conservative minded folks I know both on and offline.

The Irish Times had hit it on the head. The GOP has gone way wacko since the Obama victory four years ago. If Orin Hatch is defeated in the Utah primaries this party is the Know Nothing Party supersized.

Another thing I think they should have mentioned was conservatives reaction when Chicago missed the 2016 Olympic bid. Simply because Obama was from Chicago. Doesn't matter that we lost out to foreign countries. Screw any benefit having the Olympics here would have had for the US or people living here. In their minds it hurts Obama so that = good. They were actually cheering and happy about the fact Chicago missed out. That's pretty much the mindset of the modern day conservative.

If they are so radical, then why do they keep kicking democrat ass?

Because of the overall slow dumbing down of America.

THe American electorate doesn't always act rationally. Think how many people deliberately vote against their own economic interests all for the sake of political ideology.

We have millions of poor people standing on the front lines politically to defend the economic interests of the corporate elite and the wealthy.

If Obama is defeated and the Republicans control both houses, we're going to see some of the most historic, retrograde legislation passed in our lifetimes.

The new GOP believes IMO that in order to kill the cancer you must first kill the body. We see how well that goes over if Mitt wins in November.

Because they're held hostage to a base full of radicals. Because your average American voter tends to be uninformed/ignorant when they go cast their vote. And unlike the Republican Party, Democrats have always had a problem with framing a message. Let alone sticking with one. You have more diversity (not just socioeconomically but politically) within the Democratic Party. Blue dogs, progressives, moderates, etc.

Republicans, on the other hand, are basically purists at this point and are so far to the right, if the earth was flat a gust of wind would blow them off into the universe. When you see Republicans like Richard Lugar, and Orrin Hatch fighting for their seats because "they aren't conservative enough" you can tell the Republican Party has a serious problem. They will tell a lie over and over and over and over until it's eventually taken as truth even when it's completely false (ie: "Democrats are weak on defense", "We'll cut spending", "Lower taxes for the rich will create jobs", "The media is liberal", etc).

Not to mention many people simply vote along party lines. But with the changing demographics in this country, the writing is on the wall. Unless the GOP doesn't want to go the way of the dodo, they're going to have to ditch the crazies that make up their base. They can't be the party of aggrieved White Men and the rich forever, and keep expecting to be taken seriously.

Another problem is American mentality itself. Where they expect the world to stop spinning on it's axis and go into reverse every election. When Obama was elected, I didn't expect much to change. And the only thing that really has is health care reform, DADT being repealed, 2 new supreme court pics, vocal support for gay marriage, and a slightly improved economy/jobs outlook. Too many voters (mainly independents) bounce back and forth between parties every 2 or 4 years and then sit around frustrated and confused because nothing ever seems to get done in such a short time span. At least not to their expectations (which are usually unrealistically high anyway).

Honestly the biggest thing I'm concerned with regarding the upcoming election are the Supreme Court picks during the next 4 years. I'm pretty sure if Obama is elected Ginsburg will retire. Wouldn't be surprised if Breyer or Kennedy goes too. We do NOT need anymore conservatives on the Supreme Court. Roberts and Alito alone have done enough damage and Scalia and Thomas are so partisan they barely even try to hide it.

    Cosign with everything Jase said.

The media is really doing a snow job on people by making them think both parties are equally dysfunctional.

Typical partisan bias. If they were such a bunch of radicals as was just spouted, Santorum would be the nominee.

Don't forget Donald Trump, Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Herman Cain, and Newt Gingrich were all front runners in the Republican race at one point or another. And all of them are crazy as cat shit to various degrees. Or just stupid (particularly Perry and Bachmann).

Let's also not forget how much more money Romney had at his disposal from Super Pacs and anonymous donations and how much he spent against Santorum. Yet despite that Santorum still gave him a serious run for his money. If Santorum had had the corporate and political backing that Romney had, he might very well be the Republican nominee. The fact that he ISN'T the nominee doesn't really say much as far as their base is concerned. He was vastly outspent. The fact that he performed as well as he did despite being vastly outspent does.

The fact that any of the above named individuals were even considered as someone worthy of holding the office of the president by anyone, let alone a great many on the Republican side speaks volumes about where that party is today.

I would think that the only persons who would really want the government to control their body is the ones who can't do it for themselves.

True indeed. Candidates of the GOP are not qualified to be POTUS.
