go back and read what I stated. Cornel is promoting himself. He dont care what happens to the black community. he is pushing his books and his show. I didnt say he was right or wrong. where did I say anything like that ? also you have to take that fool with a grain of salt. he is acting like a slighted bitch. he didnt get tickets to some function (you have to read the article and if you watched MSNBC...the ed shultz show) obama was doing and he became the mad little bitch

 

I agree with the bolded, but:

a) A rising tide floats all boats
b) There's only so much Obama can do about 30+ years of deregulated (that pesky GOP economic mantra) corporations offshoring jobs to cheaper countries with no penalty
c) There's only so much Obama can do when forces would rather crash the US economy than see him succeed as President
d) Obama is the President of the United States, not just the President of Black People

There used to be black grocers, doctors, attorneys, undertakers, all walks of life. There are black accountants right on this board. If we did more in 2011 than try to rap and play sports, maybe we could hire ourselves. You don't hear Chinese-Americans for example cry about unemployment, they make their own jobs, and hire their own. Of course, black "thinkers" like West and Tavis avoid any notion of self-responsibility.

The problem is that Tavis and West aren't the ones to be delivering this message, even if their argument has merit because their heart felt sincerity in righteously criticizing the POTUS is suspect.

If Obama had been inviting Tavis and Cornel West to the WH once a month, you think these BM would be bitching out loud right now??

Im no Cornell lover, trust me, (or Tavis), I am trying to remain objective and on the side of the costituents, that's all. All that you say about self promotion, Obama has also partaken in all the way up to the Highest office.

Your statement, "...he didnt get tickets to some function obama was doing and he became the mad little bitch", it was in fact the Presidential inauguration, and I believe the issue in question was his mother and brother's attendence. Cornell supported and attended Obama on 65 of his primary tours..not sure he didn't get an invite.

However the "bitching' motivation you refer to had nothing to do with lack of tickets, and more to do with Obama snubbing Tavis's annual State of Black America prior to the election.

 

Wow Im looking at some of these comments and noticing just how much of a lively debat it is. In my opinion I think it is true that guys like cornell west and Tavis may be hurting from not being allowed into obamas inner circle and sure they may have a few big axes to grind because of it but that doesnt mean that they dont have legitamate grievances with the administration and its silence on poverty and specifically black poverty. Black unemployment has reached sky high levels under obama and police brutality has also been on the rise. Yet obama either because of his high position or because of his fear of alienating certain parts of the voter base hasnt spoken on these specific issues they way he should and I think this has hurt alot of black people. Rather they are public figures or not.

 

He didn't do it trying to knock the next cat's hustle, unless you count the Loyal Opposition.

And your last sentence basically agrees with our take i.e. "crabs in a barrel."

I'm not too familiar with West's overall body of work, having seen him speak on some panels, shows etc, and I have followed Tavis to a degree simply because he is a highly exposed commentator. Having said that, the core message is still the big picture, regardless of the messengers.

I love that you said Obama is the President of the UNITED States, so I'd like you to include the poor and disenfranchised. We are as strong as our weakest link, no?

I see you blame the GOP for deregulation...but remember NAFTA was also heavily pushed by the Clinton Admininstraton, and signed into law. I recall Gore pounding on Ross Perot on LKL how great it would be for the US, meanwhile as of last year, the US lost 5 trillion in tax revenue fattening Big Corp, who in grattitude for it, progressively exported thousands of US jobs to Mexico and Canada.

 

I do indeed blame the GOP for deregulation. Deregulation, union-busting, tax breaks for the rich are all Reaganite hallmarks. I don't let the Clinton Administration off the hook, but overall the Clintonites did more good than harm re: the American Economy.

EVERYONE is hurting in this economy, #1. Poor people don't vote, #2.

And as andreboba pointed out, Tavis and West aren't the best messengers as their blatant self-interest is transparent.

They partied from 2000-2008 while GWB/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Neocons and the bankers and war profiteers embroiled us in two wars, looted America and ran up the debt, now they wanna cry foul.
