Taxing the Miles You Drive

I'm hearing that there is a proposal to tax the miles that you drive your car. A device would be installed on the vehicle that monitors your mileage and that data will be collected at gas stations or collected by GPS like devices as being used in some rental car companies. Anyone here aware of this proposal.

I heard about that but the Obama adminstration said not to it. All you have to do is pull out the device and bam no taxes. This idea was only floated for a non gas car driving industry.

 

Thank you Ms. Kunoichi, I feel very uneasy about this study. It means it's probably being seriously considered to make up for lost revenues for the government. The Internet will be next for study to tax the hell out of electronic commerce. Again, thanks for being here to give us the scoop.

 

this would concern me especially being in sales...i don't drive nearly as much as my counter parts do in larger markets...we already have our car allowances taxed...we use our own vehicle...our company pays for gas...probably the reason i never complain about gas prices...i think it would make more sense to put up additional tolls instead of taxing by the mile

 

just curious lippy, when you have car allowances taxed, does it not mean that at the end of the year you indeed enjoyed some benefit that could be classified as income, especially when all adjustments needed are made?

I have a feeling businesses would not be affected per se, I suspect there is a formula for calculating car trips for personal use, and that for business use. I might be wrong though.Just working with tax principles here.

 

I'm in complete agreement. We need to do this so our country's deficits can become lower in the future.

yes this is possible but you also have to take into consideration wear and tear on your car...new tires...oil changes...brak pads and rotor...flushing the cooling system..windshields...

our company used to not tax the car allowance...this year we went with a payroll company and at the end of the year they finally figured out that our employer was not taxing us and hit us with a heavy tax bill that wiped out one paycheck...

i still have not completed my 2010 taxes because now i have to produce all of these receipts to counter the tax and hopefully get some of it back

our home offices are also up for discussion...home computers...our company pays for a fax machine and a payment towards cellphone...so anything else business related can be long formed...

 

Taxing the Miles, taxing amount of surfing on the internet, WTF?

 

We already pay taxes on the gas we put in our tank, on the repairs and matinence so more taxes on the same is......ummmm......ridiculous. People need vehicles to work and live. Public transportation isn't always available.

You're totally right, Chosen 1. We should do whatever it takes so our country's credit rating isn't affected negatively in the future, as the S&P has already warned, if we don't do something to mitigate our deficits.

 

BO had everything going his way in ’08 and still only got 53 % of the vote and 47 % of the country being against him, this gonna be a very tough & close election.

 

OK...O'Bomber didn't take us to war...but he can bring us OUT of it, can't he ?? and why are we occupying other NON- American countries ?? and why are we paying for oil in other countries when America has plenty of oil on our own soil.

and WHY does O'Bomber want to tax gas mileage ??

 

The three things we need to do no ONE politician will ever agree too.

- Add tariffs to good made outside of the US
- Raise taxes
- Decrease government spending.


...ALL three of those things.

 

one thing the american people can do collectively is seek out and buy american made products...even if they cost a little more...if we trended toward doing this more we would all benefit in the long run but we have to forecast beyond the paycheck to paycheck thinking as well as the immediate gratification of a new item...
