I remember reading something Malcolm X once said that whites expect blacks to converse only on the topic of race and nothing else. Have any of you black men on this site surprised whites or any other racial group member that your frame of reference extends beyond the topic of race? Did you ever feel insulted that they would even think that you were much smarter than they on diverse topics or that you were informed?

i don't get insulted. it is kind of expected that people don't think i can think. it's something i have observed since i was a teenager. people prejudging. they usually do, and good for them, get embarassed though once they see their preconception is incorrect.

the way i like to look at though is, EVERYONE is a basic level thinker until they prove otherwise. (basic meaning, they cannot handle a wide array of topics and often cannot fully grasp a complete concept) i give the benefit of the doubt to nobody, especially based on something as simple as race, until they show they are actually intelligent. especially in these days and times, so many people in places of authority and influence who are not actually intelligent. (insert here, the average boss/supervisor) it's sad...

No not really but I am young so my generation is more understanding than the older generations. However, there are still stupid comments.

Of course. In matters of race that would include Black music and culture as well as to some degree sports, I would presume.

On the second question, I would not say that I felt insulted because I don't value the opinion of ignorant people. Sometimes a reaction is necessary but, I will not waste my time and passion it most cases. These people bore me, more than anything because they are mentally stuck.

There was a poster on here that turned out to be a white male (as a few of us suspected) who thought he was smarter than the BM on here. He claimed to be 19 yet, the racist attitudes and assumptions existed regardless of his age. So Malcolm's words still hold weight.

Well, when you're the victim of a globally oppressed group of people with all kinds of fucked up issues due to colonialism and various other factors involved, it would seem reasonable that 'blacks' would tend to talk about it more often than any other group.

Dunno about black people specifically, but American people in general seem a little obsessed with race and background.

    rush....
In 2003, Limbaugh had a brief stint as a pro football commentator with ESPN. He resigned a few weeks into the 2003 NFL season after making comments about the press coverage for quarterback Donovan McNabb that caused a lot of controversy and accusations of racism on the part of Limbaugh. His comment was: "I don't think [McNabb's] been that good from the get-go. I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there's a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."[12] For example, a sportswriter construed the comment as racist against himself and other sportswriters.[13] Another sports analyst wrote Limbaugh's viewpoint was shared by "many football fans and analysts" and "it is ...absurd to say that the sports media haven't overrated Donovan McNabb because he's black."[14]

Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.

Have you looked around this place called America? The prison industrial complex, racial profiling, the so-called war on drugs, police brutality are all as strong as ever. These are things that are happening right now.....and I'm not even going to get into a history lesson. That is my day job, and I am off the clock.

It's a bit of a contradiction. While the number of black males in prison, they are also the majority who were arrested for fallacious misdemeanors and even ones they haven't committed. The injustice comes from how the laws or procedures tend to target specific groups, which is an injustice itself.

A good example would be drugs. If you paid close attention to what was going on last year, Congress tried to revise the drug laws because certain drugs such as cocaine and marijuana carried harsher sentences than those with simple crack (or powdered material). Coincidentally, blacks tend to carry marijuana as the main drug, hence the heftier sentencing. If the laws were treated equally, then all drug substances would carry equal offenses regardless of ethnicity.

The War on Drugs have been a joke since it was first enacted by the Nixon Administration and it's a waste of time and resources, hence they should be revised dramatically or decriminalized altogether. It worked in Portugal and there's less crime there too, in all forms, including murder.

I can give off another example: racial-profiling, but that has been done to death. But the simple matter is that, it's pretty much noticeable in many parts of the country and it's fairly "legal".
