US convenes Caribbean officials to fight drug-trafficking

The United States and its Caribbean neighbors on Thursday launched an initiative aimed at boosting regional security by fighting drug-traffickers and other transnational criminal gangs.

The Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI) is designed to complement the larger Merida Initiative, launched in 2008 to help Mexico, Central American countries, the Dominican Republic and Haiti fight drugs and other gangs.

Arturo Valenzuela, the top US diplomat for Latin America, told officials from Caribbean nations that Washington was committing the 45 million dollars pledged by President Barack Obama to underpin their partnership.
