How is this done? What I learned about prejudice was from subtle comments or inflections of the voice from my family. It was understood that certain relationships were "unacceptable", if you will. I'm not disagreeing with you but asking how this is demonstrated. And to the first Malcolm X quote, about black unity: Why is there such division? Or is that the eternally debated question to which there is no answer?
In fact whites enslaved native americans right alongside blacks. In fact not all native americans enslaved blacks right alongside whites. In fact the term slavery used for native americans and blacks was often nowhere near the same form of slavery that whites used against blacks and native americans. In fact many Africans escaping slavery did find refuge with Amerindians and as a result, faced repercussions with the US Government. In fact you mean to tell me you that you can speak factually on the slave practices of the Prawnee, the Blackfoot, the Arapaho, the Seminole, the Sioux, the Cheyenne, the Comanche? Or, by native americans are we going to just discuss the Cherokee while pretending that the five hundred and fifty nine other tribes do not really exist? Just curious.... Blacks are uneducated thugs unfit to intermingle with whites. Wow... look at that... I can make blanket statements too!
Through cultural norms, media, and entertainment. To keep it simple without a bunch of jargon we are constantly bombarded with images of successful and/or famous white people who are successful and/or for a plethora of reasons. Where as black achievement or lack thereof is relegated to very specific areas that don't usually include whites. So the misguided perception puts whites and blacks in restrictive categories where they base commonalities tied to media and entertainment.
So then it's very subconscious? I mean, I'm trying to think back to what I understood growing up - how I came to even know any stereotypes (the few I've heard). I didn't come by them in the way you mentioned. And in what areas is there black achievement that doesn't include whites?! In some areas, black achievement supercedes that of whites, but I don't know of any areas in anything that are whites only or blacks only.
Sports like basketball and boxing where there a few to no whites. Things like business and sciences where there are few to no blacks which develop memes like whites are smart and good at business and blacks are good at sports.
Is it fair to say there are few to no blacks in business/science? How do we know that? Unlike sports which are highly visible, men and women in the business/science world are less known. Yes, because of sheer numbers, there are likely more whites in both fields, but are they necessarily more successful? As is human nature, we focus on what's wrong instead of what's right. What's lacking instead of what we can celebrate.
But that's the point. What's more visible? The big name CEOs are all white. Think of five big names in business I bet they're all white. Think of smart men we automatically go names like Einstein Newton Edison Tesla Hawking. So when we think of people who are smart we think white people. We think of people with money we think white people because these are the most readily available example. You think the richest man in the world being Mexican changed the perception of Mexicans? Nope because people barely know or care. Its all about whats visible and what's greatly supported by media.
Yes, but they aren't as visible. I would bet if you ask the average citizen who they think of first when you mention wealth, many will answer as I did. Not that I'm average, of course..
I bet they would list white entertainers first but regardless if you asked your average person to list some smart people guaranteed they'd all be white even though there are probably more Asian ones out there right now. Also to your point about entertainers and athletes yeah they have money but I think if you say wealthy people think Gates Jobs Zuckerberg Trump Buffet not Woods or Jordan
good post. interesting points. Can't underestimate the damage that ollie north's crack epidemic did to black culture, black communities, black outlooks, black reputation For real. Drug epidemics come and go, but that was a big one
Outstanding post! "You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to jaisee again." This one too.
The problem is they could and did. That's why they were either assassinated, deported and had false allegations thrown at them.MLK and Malcolm X scared the elite whites more than anything in American history.
So did the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover's COINTELPRO(Counter Intelligence Program). J. Edgar Hoover had issues with looking at a black man face to face. He had to meet with MLK and a few other Civil Rights leaders and he didn't even look at them or speak to them. The COINTELPRO had a lot of racist intent. The FBI accidently killed a man they thought was in the Black Panthers in a raid. It was a black mark against the Bureau that program.
