i think someone here is missing the point...abuse is not just physical...someone that witnessed a parent abusing a spouse might say that they will never do that...then the arguing begins...the abuser never gives in or conceeds his fight...never admits he might be wrong...he just keeps harping and harping and harping...he feels the need to be right...then he gets a few jabs in about her personal appearance...gained a little weight honey since we got married...the next argument he yells a little louder...calls her a few more names...a few more insults...he gets in her face but he vows never to hit her because his father hit his mother...the arguments happen more frequently...the reason for the arguments get less important...it becomes about control...after every fight he feels remorse and says he is sorry...she doesn't have any bruises and no broken bones...but she is a broken woman...

newsflash: this is also an abuser

This sounds like almost every single relationship I have had with a Black Woman or a self proclaimed "Ms. Independent". I agree, abuse is abuse, verbal or non verbal. Unfortunately, it's normally just men that get confronted and not so much the women (gender norms I suppose).

it is unfortunate but true that the person i describe is more likely to become an abuser than to be abused...they may not even realize that their behavior is abusive...it will be explained away as the other person is bat shit crazy and drove me to do it...this person has a hard time looking in the mirror to see who they really are...they have idealistic view of themselves that does not emulate their actions...

Oh, I absolutely agree with you. 100%.

Your last paragraph sends chills down my spine. I think I know someone like that. Fortunately, I didn't get involved with him. But he was very charming, a master of seduction and then there would be sudden flashes of anger that were really disproportionate to the situation. As I recall, his father was physically abusive. I don't know that this guy is physically so, but I could easily see him as being verbally abusive. He also suffers from PTSD. I've severed all contact with him because he is duplicitous and just toxic for me. I'm thinking I dodged a nasty one.

It is. Another piece of the very complex puzzle is pride. It's really hard, especially for a bright, independent person to go to their family and say "I fucked up so badly. I married an abuser and I'm being abused." One of the reasons that's so hard to do is because of statements and questions about how could one *possibly* stay in that situation. How did you allow yourself to be manipulated that way??

In my case, and again, I stress it wasn't mostly a physical thing, it helped that when I put my son in therapy so he'd have a neutral adult to talk to during the divorce process, his therapist identified my ex as a sociopath (he'd met him and spent several sessions with him). I had all those same questions - how could I have let this happen? What red flags did I miss? How could someone like *me* have ended up this way??

He told me that my ex was a sociopath, and they are masterful at what they do. He said that there *were* no red flags I missed, that there was no way for me to know what my ex was until he chose to show it to me. I had a really hard time coming to terms with that, and it took some time.

Sociopaths are NOT identifiable up front. That's their stock in trade. In fact, they are charming as all hell.

I'm not willing/able to contribute, but just wanted to say a big thanks to pixie and everyone else for sharing their stories here. It is hard and a huge thing to do.

As for the 'what can I do?'s, talk and listen. It isn't just about educating people in that situation(although often victims aren't able to recognise it without help), it's about people outside the situation being able to see the signs and know what to do or say in these situations.

The absolute worse thing we can do to a woman who says her mate was abusive is to deny her experience. He may seem like the sweetest, kindest, most loving and caring man on the surface but this doesn’t mean he wasn’t abusive to his mate.

In all seriousness, it sounds like the "abusee" in your example just lost one to many arguments...sounds like they share some fault in not getting their point across, or fighting back, or using insults also, etc....

In relationships both parties must seed control to the other at some point, it' usually very hard for two head strong individuals to coincide in a relationship...

Have no fear Chesbaygrl, FRESH is here...you may express yourself however you see fit...You may have gotten some unecessary backlash due to your green status...

I'm a very free thinker so I'm used backlash at times...

I see where Lippy is coming from in terms of mental abuse, but the example she provided us doesn't not fit that description for me...as well I think it's situational...some women (into SM and or other variants) would disagree with Lippy...

Personally, I dated a woman that was very quick witted, could deal out personal blows that I couldn't figure until three days later lol...she was mean, she new she was mean...but I didn't equate that to abuse...(maybe this issue has some underlining gender issues also)...

I'm sure she has seen these beautiful and tasty bits too. But, FRESH, may I remind you that...
