Thanks for the detailed breakdown!I'll leave much of the connecting subplots out so this doesn't run too long. Mary is the leader of a gang of female thieves, The 40 Elephants, working under the larger, more dangerous male 40 Elephants gang that looms over the latter phase of part 1. She immediately becomes infatuated with Hezekiah, a Jamaican born fighter who comes to the city to make a name for himself along with his brother. Hez is talented, ambitious, and charismatic and Mary feels she can use his skills to her advantage for her and the gang to heist the rich lords as long as he can keep winning fights and become a big enough draw to get into one of their houses.
Hezekiah is right to be cautious about trust her, but their mutual attraction and thirst for success brings them closer. The heist is successful, but it turns out the stolen loot is only silver plated which puts Mary in harms way for going behind her superiors back with nothing to show for it. Mary's gang becomes disillusioned with her leadership. Hez comforts her and she finally lets her guard down and falls for him. For his role in the robbery, Hez becomes a target of the 40 Elephants and secretly Mary offers Hezekiah's trainer and brother as victim to protect him. Having nothing left in the city but Hezekiah, she convinces him to flee to America with her to start a new life, but Hez finds out her role in his brothers death and shuns her. That's where part 1 ends.
