The Original Cloverfield Is Finally Getting A Direct Sequel

4bXEwnsPr4kuPgbe8ETSkM-970-80.jpg.webp

A Cloverfield sequel is in the works, according to THR.

The Cloverfield sequel reportedly won't be a found-footage movie like its predecessor, nor will it bring back Cloverfield director Matt Reeves. Joe Barton, who recently became the new showrunner for the upcoming HBO Max prequel series to Reeves' The Batman, is penning the Cloverfield sequel script, while J.J. Abrams is returning to produce under his Bad Robot Productions banner.

We don't have any concrete plot or cast details just yet, but it is being described as a sequel, so presumably it'll take place after the events of the original Cloverfield, which ended with a clear suggestion that the giant monster terrorizing New York City is still alive.

Cloverfield was one of the most talked-about horror movies of 2008, thanks in-part to a viral marketing campaign that ran cryptic teasers before showings of major theatrical releases like Transformers and Beowulf. The movie eventually spawned a franchise with 2016's 10 Cloverfield Lane and 2018's The Cloverfield Paradox, but those movies tell self-contained stories without any obvious connection to 2008's Cloverfield, so a direct sequel should be a gift to fans of the series.

It doesn't sound like there's a director nailed down just yet, but in a 2019 interview with GamesRadar, 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg had this to say about a potential Cloverfield sequel: "The answer to making a sequel to that movie or another thing, yeah totally," he said. "It's fun to joke around, like, 'What if in the next one this happened?' Over the years there's been several that were, 'Oh, that'd be cool!' But nothing that's crystallized into, 'Oh, we definitely want to do that.' And JJ [Abrams] of course has to wrap his brain around what he wants to do with that stuff."

Wakanda: Black Panther Spinoff by Ryan Coogler Heads To Disney+

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is developing a new spinoff series focused on the African kingdom of Wakanda for Disney+.

According to Deadline, the announcement comes as Coogler has signed a five-year exclusive television deal with the director's Proximity Media, which he runs with Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Ludwig Göransson, Archie Davis and Peter Nicks. Coogler is currently working on Black Panther 2 for Marvel Studios.

"Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation," Bob Iger, Executive Chairman, The Walt Disney Company, said in a statement. "With Black Panther, Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We're thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team."

"It's an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company. Working with them on Black Panther was a dream come true," Coogler said on behalf of Proximity Media. "As avid consumers of television, we couldn't be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella. We look forward to learning, growing, and building a relationship with audiences all over the world through the Disney platforms. We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios where we will be working closely with them on select MCU shows for Disney+. We're already in the mix on some projects that we can't wait to share."

Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett will return for the sequel to 2018's Black Panther. Production on Black Panther 2 is scheduled to start in Atlanta in July 2021, with Narcos: Mexico star Tenoch Huerta reported to play a villain.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has stated that following the death of Chadwick Boseman, the role of T'Challa in Black Panther 2 will not utilize CGI. "So much of the comics and that first movie is the world of Wakanda. Wakanda is a place to further explore with characters and different subcultures. This was always and initially the primary focus of the next story," Feige said. "We're not going to have a CG Chadwick and we're not recasting T'Challa."

Feige added, "Ryan Coogler is working very hard right now on the script with all the respect and love and genius that he has, which gives us great solace, so it was always about furthering the mythology and the inspiration of Wakanda. There's also the task of honoring and respecting the ongoing learnings and teachings from Chad as well."

Black Panther star Angela Bassett has also reiterated how Boseman "cannot be duplicated."

Boseman passed away in August 2020 at 43 after a years-long battle with colon cancer. The actor had been diagnosed with the disease in 2016, but kept his diagnosis a secret from the general public and from Marvel Studios. Boseman was fighting the disease during the filming of Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther 2 arrives in theaters July 8, 2022.

AMC+ will debut the first episode of The Walking Dead's highly-anticipated extended 10th season on Sunday, February 21 - one week ahead of its linear premiere on Sunday, February 28 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on AMC. All subsequent episodes will debut early on the premium streaming bundle, every Thursday prior to the episodes' linear premiere on Sundays, beginning March 4.

Last on The Walking Dead, we witnessed the fall of Alpha (Samantha Morton) and the end of the Whisperers War. The Kingdom had fallen, Hilltop was virtually destroyed and Alexandria abandoned to prepare for final battle. Our survivors were trapped and separated from one another. Yet, when faced with almost certain death, they rallied together to fight, killing Beta (Ryan Hurst) and eliminating the threat of the horde.

In these six new episodes, we find our survivors trying to pick themselves up by their bootstraps following the destruction the Whisperers left in their wake. The years of struggle weigh upon them as past traumas surface, exposing their more vulnerable sides. As they question the state of humanity, the state of their collective community, and the states of their minds, will they find the inner strength to persevere with their lives, friendships, and group intact?

Premise: In the last years of Victoria’s reign, London is beset by the “Touched”: people — mostly women — who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities, some charming, some very disturbing. Among them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), a mysterious, quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), a brilliant young inventor. They are the champions of this new underclass, making a home for the Touched, while fighting the forces of… well, pretty much all the forces — to make room for those whom history as we know it has no place.

Anyone watching ‘Lupin’ on Netflix? A very cool, light hearted, but just serious enough to give it some weight, show about a Robin Hood type of brotha’ who is a very slick, master thief.

What makes the show even better is it pisses off the kind of black women who loved ‘Scandal,’ The black girl’s season of ‘The Bachelorette’ and Serena Williams’ “upgrade” yet, somehow get outraged when a black male lead character is matched with a white woman. This time they’ve managed to get upset because Lupin doesn’t feature any black women.

Makes the show that much more doper.

Such a good show.

I enjoy Lupin I very much like this genre of show.

A friend recommended this show to me. It's in my queue, so I will start it soon.

I have yet to start it but I'm hearing good things about it.

I don't think I've EVER watched a foreign-language film or TV show before. Is there an English dub available or something? I was surprised to see black folks on my Twitter feed talking about this show.
