Avoiding conversation is something different, and it can be done in ways other than texting. I don't care for talking on the phone. A phone call is like a sudden demand that the person you are calling stop whatever it is that they are doing and speak to you. A text can be read and responded to at one's leisure. I frequently have conversations with family, friends, and colleagues.

I think that calling people who converse by text "immature, inconsiderate, and lazy" is judgemental, antiquated, and rude. :p

Like I said, sometimes it is practical & handy to use. I still think for a person's SO (which is who I was referring to) to replace real conversation with texting is immature, inconsiderate & lazy, that doesn't make me "judgmental, antiquated & rude". In dating or a relationship, it's not the ideal form of communication for me; especially if you're trying to get to know someone. I get more out of hearing the tone of voice, actual laughter vs LOL, knowing what someone actually means by something they said, etc., & texting doesn't offer those things. I'd much rather hear my SO telling me he loves me than sending it to me via text. ;)

It sound like it's been pretty rough for you. It's been a kind of rough for me too. I hope you get to feeling better, & I hope your week & weekend are better this week.

I still prefer substance over form. And I like living in the 21st century. ;) (And yeah, to the extent that you are making judgments about who someone is - rude, immature, and lazy - based on the means through which they communicate, that DOES make you judgmental.)

I get where you're coming from, & if it works for you that's great. I'm just talking about what works for me. We all have our preferences & experiences, & that's really where I was coming from. In my experience I've been involved with men who used it as their primary means of communication because they were those things...I can see how it came across as saying they were jerks because they preferred to text, which is not what I meant. If I came across as being judgmental, that wasn't my intention. Like the saying goes, different strokes for different folks, & if works for some people, more power to them. All I'm saying is my overall preference is talking over texting. I'm sorry if I came across as a turd. I hope you know I have nothing but respect & love for you Nerdy.

I'd really like to run away from my body today.

As for the texting thing, to me it's a handy way of communicating things like "Can you stop and get milk on your way here?" or "I'm on my way, see you soon."

I do have one friend in the UK who hates telephones, so we text a lot, but for a serious conversation with someone in your day to day life, I think it's not as effective a means of communication. Things are too easily misunderstood that way.

I'm sorry to hear that, Pixie. Are you still dealing with that migraine? Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a pain-free day? I don't think I'd know how to act.

Things being too easily misunderstood is the biggest thing I don't like about texting; especially when it's something serious. You're right; it is handy for the simple stuff. As I mentioned, I have two LD friends who I text or IM with (one quite a bit), but we also talk on occasion, too. I have no problem compromising, but a man should be willing to do the same.

.

Agreed. Yes, migraine, back spasms, leg spasms. Thursday I had a tremor so bad I couldnt handle a coffee cup. MS is trying to annoy me to death.

And, if I'm being honest with myself, I'm sort of staring down into The Pit today. Getting SSDI on the first application has made me sort of come face to face with the fact that I *am* actually disabled by this damned disease, even if I don't look it. It's taken away so much that I loved...and since the future is utterly unpredictable, it's scary too. I think having the government recognize the disability has been an unpleasant thing for me to face.

I can't say I know exactly where you're coming from, but I have had some serious health issues that completely changed my life & it was definitely not easy to face & accept the changes/losses (still isn't sometimes). My heart goes out to you, Pixie; I hate that you're suffering. I can't imagine dealing with something as serious as MS & all that it entails. I know I can't offer much other e-hugs & e-love, but I'm sending you all the positive thoughts I can your way. :smt058

Pixie, hope you feel better. I hope you get to experience a long remission from this debilitating disease. Positive energy toward you lady.

Thanks, Tam, it's much appreciated. Some days, this MonSter is scary.

My friends are wearing me out. We have tried to get together two times this weekend, three of us. In between all of my other stuff I am trying.

They both have called and texted me a bazillion times today. I have wasted hours. With all of my friends I seem to all be the go between or the planner person. If I don't then things fizzle.........but it drives me nutz :-|

Thought about you the other day when I heard this was coming up and watched it for you.

While it showed progress for some, it seems a lot to go through..but the shoe tying comparison was evident. Anyway, take what you will from it, even if its nothing...:smt001

Thanks, Kunoichi! This is called CCSVI, and it is very controversial. Some of the patients who have had it have regressed. I'm taking a wait and see attitude, since it also can have complications up to and including death. Some folks swear by it however, so who knows? It can be hard to judge with MS especially if it's relapsing-remitting, because those people can go years in between relapses sometimes. My doctor wont put a label on what kind of MS I have, but it's pretty clear to me that it's what's known as Secondary Progressive, which means I'm never symptom free.

There was a great article this week that in the UK, they have a Phase II study going where they will take bone marrow from a patient, grow the stem cells from it and inject them back into the patient. It sounds promising, they think it may even reverse some of the damage, but it is limited to 150 people, and it will be 5 years before they have results. They are trying to work internationally so that if after a Phase III and Phase IV study they won't have to start all over again in each country.

I'm watching Bill Maher and he brought upi that the Fort Hood shooter was called a Muslim terrorist and that A.B. In Norway has not been called a Christian Terrorist. This is a fantastic discussion!!!!!!!!

It was especially frustrating for me because I told him how I felt about it, but he obviously didn't give a damn. He just kept right on texting rather than talking, & he also expected those instant replies. It's funny when they say that texting is an "easier" way to have convo, but that's a load of crap. He would tell me that crap, yet many of his texts were sent while he was driving; there's nothing "easy" (or safe) about that.

That's true to an extent, but texting is not the best way to have a real conversation; especially an important one. Sometimes texting has it's practical uses; I have a couple of LD friends who I text back & forth with on occasion because it's usually cheaper than calling (Skype or Yahoo Messenger are cheap ways to call if you have access to them), but I think one of the reasons folks use texting so much is to avoid actual conversation.

I agree with you. I know 2 guys who are supposedly trying to get to know me, love to text. I'm like uhh, I'm not really getting to know you by a few words here and there. It's annoying. It's my fault for texting first with people, but eventually you want to take it the phone. I do that so it's convenient.

Welcome back Nyx. Hope today is better for you.

Hi Tree, I'm IB, sorry to hear you're going through that.

My friends are wearing me out. We have tried to get together two times this weekend, three of us. In between all of my other stuff I am trying.

That sucks. Hopefully you guys can get together some time.

For many years, I was trying to plan a family reunion, but shit, that's been the hardest task cause something always came up, so I gave up on it.
